Bottle tops

Anybody remember playing beeries? Took a soda or bear bottle cap rubbed it on the sidewalk till all the paint was off. Sometimes remove the cork and fill it with wax or lead to make in heavier.

My brother Warren and I had a bottle cap court (is court the right word?) in our basement at 4976 Pennway. We had a concrete floor and drew it there. It was about 9 feet square. Also, remember playing it in the streets. We also chalked a lot in the streets.

Yes Gary court is correct. It had small boxes numbered 1 to 15.

Lets talk about the games we played
many variety of tag games
Baby in the Air, Peg, Step ball, wire ball, wiffle ball, box ball, wall ball, chink.
How we all played in the street at the end of Whitaker Ave before the bridge was built, I think 1965
making scooters from skates that had a skate key, taking a soda bottle case and a 1x3 and putting skates on the bottom and decorating with bottle caps. Taking baseball cards and with a clothes pin would make the bike sound like a motor cycle
Also taking balloons and tying to the spokes of the bike
also making water balloons
What great fun we had without any exotic toys

For those of us who were a bit "north" of yous guys in the 5000 block, we played a mean game of kick ball in the alley between Pennway and Whitaker. Up at the red brick wall at the top of the alley by Herkness, we played chink; We'd draw beeries courts on patios or in the street. And how about the great sled rides down Pennway's 5000 block or behind on the "hill"?

Way to go Ira I forgot about the sled rides! Most of the parking on Pennway 5000 block was the back in kind. After a good snow fall the cars would slip and slide as they tried to back up. The more they tried the more they would slide and the more they would slide the more ice they made. The more ice the better the sled rides . Sometimes the sun would melt a patch of the street at the bottom of the hill right down to the black top. Hitting that was like automatic brakes.

And who remembers "Suicide Hill." That's where we walked, pulling our sleds up the Blvd from "F", across the Tookany to the "other side" by "D" street.
The best hill for sledding. If you got a great run, and didn't fall off on the way, you might reach the creek.
If you didn't have a sled, you found a piec of cardboard box and slid down on that.
Remember going on a sled with more than one person? How about how we had to intertwine legs by the person in front of you just the right way so everyone had a chance to stay on for the full ride.

I have vague memories of Suicide Hill! Was that the one with the tree root growing into the path of the sled such that with a good head of speed you'd go airborne for a few seconds? You had to belly-flop that one.

We did sometimes make "trains" of three to five sleds going down the various hills.

Gary
The best part about going on a sled with more than one person was if the other person was a girl.

Don't remember being that lucky those years. I was a bit chubby growing up and not very confident. That didn't fully turn around until the early 1970s.

I may be a bit younger than the average age of the members but I have very fond memories of playing Steal the Bacon, Spring or Freedom and Kick the Can.

As far back as I can remember, on the north side of the Blvd at F St., there was the Mobil gas station. Immediately next to the gas station was the Blvd Apartments. Can anyone tell me what existed there before the Blvd Apartments?

On a different note, can you remember any of the guys who worked at the R&W?

I was born in June 1953. The apartments were there before I was born. R&W was owned by the Bush family and it was named for two sons, Ray and Warren.
