Some of my favorite memories in a long list of favorite memories: Block Parties that always included Alex's Pizza truck and the truck with the rides that would pull up in front of Paula's house,snowball fights outside my house(especially with two big brothers who usually protected me from ice balls and such from the bigger kids),eating lunch at Polands and the absolute best corn beef specials in the world from R+W.I remember when our neighbor Angie (I think that was her name)across the street,started selling very good Italian dishes right from her kitchen.That is until some jerk felt the need to rat her out and she had to stop.

Remember the Bazaars in the school yard at Creighton? My mom was the fortune teller one year.How about those cake sales set up in the hallways?My uncle was principal then.

Anyone remember the beautiful cherry blossom trees that grew in my yard? They bloomed right around Mothers Day.One year we were eating dinner over at Neil Wagonheim's house,when someone opened the front door and a wave of pink petals blew into the house and onto the roast that was on the dining room table.

There was a luncheonette on the corner of Herkness and Mebus. It had a couple different owners over the years we lived there. They had a pinball machine, a fountain and a grill.
There was a place across the creek at Whitaker and Wyoming called Decks, which was also a luncheonette with a grill. Across Wyoming from Decks was a pizzeria but we always went to Charlies.

Polands was nothing like R+W,it was as you said a luncheonette. There was another store right across the street,but I don't remember what it was called.
The nearest store to me was Lou's or Nates,it was called both I think.I can actualy close my eyes and picture the store in detail.My mom often had me drop off a shopping list then Nate would deliver it right to the house.
By the way the cherry blossom trees that I mentioned were cut down by whoever moved in after my parents moved to Israel,many years ago. How sad.Also gone is the lovely ivy front lawn that my mom took such good care of.
Does anyone remember "Camp Pennway" I don't remember what girls ran it but I remember it fondly.
People living on Pennway Street now have no idea of what a wonderful place it was.

Yes Lou's or Nates was a grocery store on Pennway and I went there with my mother so many times. I can see the older and younger men who owned the store working behind the deli counter. The older man was so kind and sweet to me as a young girl. You bought your pretzels (Reisman's) from a big bin and he always gave me a few. They were the best pretzels!! It was a small place but it had produce, can/freezer goods and it was just a warm,cozy place to visit that slways smelled good. Like R&W, pickles were always from a barrel!
We went to school with the younger man's son. I forget his name but can still see his face...
What other stores do you remember? There was a beauty shop off of Whitaker. Was it called "Cookies" or was that the name of someone who worked there? Connie

Lou's was owned by Lou Cohen and his wife. His son Nate also worked there and did indeed deliver. Nate's wife also worked there. I remember one daughter, Stephanie who was my age.

At one time the grocery store at F and Jericho Road was called Ernie's.

It was Eddie's (Greenspan) for which your brother was friendly with daughter Susan, then became Ernie's who had worked at R & W
I still communicate with Jerry his oldest son, Ernie is still living although his mother Bella passed away many years ago.

also for a few years there was a small fruit store that was behind the store on Jericho RD but in ame building

there was also a tailor shop on the corner of Whitaker and Jericho I would say SE corner
also Broitmen's was a barber shop on the Blvd one block above F st

the grocery store off of Whitaker ave and Smylie was Lennie's (Aniloff) there was a shoe repair across the street, does anyone remember the name

I reconnected with Robyn Vineberg Green through the 2nd and Cheltenham website, which is where I got the idea and platform to start our F & the Blvd site. Robyn told me that her great-grandmother lived on the corner of F and the Blvd., over the pharmacy. Her Uncle owned a tailor shop across the street which moved to Whitaker and Jericho. His name is Mac Pizzi. We knew him as "Mac" the tailor and used his services for many years.

Stephanie Cohen had a brother Mark. Mark was a bit younger than I was.
Nate had a 51 Plymouth (gray as I recall) that he used to deliver with. It was a junker but My Dad told me he had that car from new and that he won it. He sure got the max use out of it !

Lou's was a nice store but let us not forget Mushnic's.I don't know what kind of a store Mushnic's was but it had certain shall we say amenities that Lou's did not have. Like Mushnic's sold comics and had a table and chairs in the store. For 25 cents you could get a 12 oz. soda and a Tastykake pie. Mushnic would let you read the comics as long as you did not take them out of the store for free. Also Mushnic's was the only store that I knew of that sold yo yo strings. You could get a yo yo in a lot of places but replacement strings that was another thing. Mushnic's had punks, a must if you were outside in the summer after the sun went down. Also for those of us who experimented with smoke, Mushnic's sold cigarettes to anyone.

It always depended where you lived,
I was across Jericho from Bill's (Fleishman)and Ann his wife
he had pin ball and snow cones where he would give you extra juice (syrup)for the cones. I remember seeing the ice truck come and deliver large blocks of ice. Bill also ran numbers from the store but we were too young and naive to know that
He also had a machine like pin ball where they did numbers and he paid off $$. Bill also had scooped ice cream I think Breyers or Sealtest and you had a choice of plain or sugar cones as well as a large variety of penny candy and nickel chocolate bars (Hershey's)also as previously mentioned the pretzel sticks from Reisman's that were in a round jar with a metal lid. I would go there in the PM to pick up the Bulletin that was delivered 2 or 3 times a day, 3 or 4 star editions
My aunt lived across the street from Mushnick's so I remember my Uncle giving me money to get candy on a Sat night or Sunday. Old man Mushnick did have an ornery attitude sometimes to the kids
Life was great and simple back in the 50's and 60's

I'll fix my map this week to reflect these two names.

As I recall, the shoe repair was called Smiley's.

At one time there was a small grocery store near the R&W. I think it is #10 on Ira's map BUT it should be closer to the R&W. The R&W bought it out and expanded their store into that grocery store.

FYI R&W stands for Ray and Walt

The shoe repairman's name was Rocky. His store relocated to Magee St. (just east of Castor Ave.) where he remained in business until at least 1989.

That was when I was young and innocent

And I remember and reflect on the young faces

Gary, the pizza place across from Deck's was called Villa Napoli. Pizza was good, but nothing compares to Charlie's. Just had one last week, lol.

As for strolling down memory lane, on my side of the creek, park or bridge, (I still live at Whitaker and Louden) let us not forget, starting at Whitaker and Wyoming, we have Deck's Luncheonette with a great soda fountain. I remember buying my parents cigarettes out of the machine for $.27, you would put in $.30 and got $.03 change in the cellophane of the cigarette pack. Across the street was Villa Napoli Pizza Place, Nappens Gulf Station, other corner was Ben Kravitz's gas station, down Wyoming you had Gold's Hosiery, Plotkin's Jewish Deli, and at the corner of Rorer and Wyoming was a store where a woman sold home made Jewish food, then became a Chinese Restaurant. Across the street was Beth Uziel, D Street started Abe's Jewish Deli, then next door was Cohen's Jewish Deli, Burke's 5 and 10 store, Real Estate Store, pharmacy, Walkers Drug Store, Anita's Clothing Store, Matt's Bar, Leon's Shop and Bag. Across Wyoming you had a fruit and produce store (I believe the owners name was Meyers or Myerwitz and they had a son who murdered a man on Delaware Avenue), Handlers Pharmacy, Bruno's Bar, Perry's Barbershop, Bogoslofskys Bakery, Hy Genyons Beauty Parlor, Cherrydale Farms Candy, another grocery store who would sell you fresh potato chips and pretzels for $.05 a bag. Do you remember when Al Ruben started his TV repair shop at C and Wyoming, moved to Whitaker and Wyoming then to D and Wyoming and finally to Richmond and Allegheny. Will write more when I remember more, lol

My sister Janice and I ran Camp Pennway. We knocked on the neighbors doors and asked the Mothers if they wanted their children to come to our camp. We walked the kids around the neighborhood, sang songs, played games and gave out snacks. We charged one penny a day to attend the camp - My mother supplied the snacks at her expense LOL!
We were very cheap babysitters and it was so much fun - good time!

Hi...I lived at 5008 Pennway Street from 1953 to 1965. I was one of you and your sister's campers. I very fondly remember the song as well as the fun we all had. Thank you for a wonderful camp expierience and memories.
