Gene was a good friend from the time I arrived in Arizona in 1963. We would race our bikes to school and had great times discovering new bands. I saw him last on his death bed, in and out of delirium. I told him who I was when I saw he was having trouble figuring out who was in his room. But he remembered the bike races and said, "You were one of the good guys." I thanked him and went home. I can't imagine ever being honored like that again.
Gene was a good soul and a good freind. I was blessed to know him in grade school, high school, DeMolay, Masons, good times and bad and back again. I was honored to be one of his pall bearers at the end. Gene had a ready smile and a quick laugh. He was taken from us too soon and now his brother Gary has joined him. Peace I pray for you Gene and all who were blessed to know you.
Gene was a great guy. He was in several of my classes at Desert View School. We were both fortunate to have an early education in music by Joseph Dodd, one of the teachers there. Joe sang in the Phoenix Orpheus Men's Choir, an internationally known men's choir at the time. When he heard good voices from his school classes, he got us tryouts for the Phoenix Boys Choir (PBC). Gene and I, his younger brother Gary, and my younger brother Pat, all were members of the of the PBC. These musical experiences enriched all of our lives soooooo much If I could see Mr. Dodd today, I would thank him from the bottom of my heart for the love of music he instilled in us all and that we all shared.
Gene, you are missed. And, if I ever make it to heaven, which at times seems somewhat doubtful, according to the somewhat skeptical opinions from a number of my friends (what to they know?), we'll be singin' in the choir once again.......mk
It has taken me way too long to honor one of my best friends Gene Roberts. I remember meeting him in the summer of 1968 at Sunnyslope. He was with a group of guys that I became friends with during my years at Sunnyslope - one of which was Steve Schallenberger who recently passed. He always had a great smile and made you feel welcome. He also had a wonderful tenor voice. He had a tremendous crush on my cousin from Texas and later wanted to marry her but she turned him down. I don't think he ever got over that. I remember attending our 30 reunion and how Gene "tore up" the dance floor with many of our classmates and my wife. He was a great dancer. He passed away shortly before his 49th birthday in 2002. I still miss him to this day. Happy trails Gene.
