In Memory

Karl Wolz

Karl Wolz

Karl Craig Wolz of Phoenix, Arizona passed away on June 2, 2016.

Born in New York, Karl inherited his father's passion for photography, shooting for his high school newspaper, and later becoming a professional photographer. Karl channeled his interest in people and places by vacationing with his wife and son all over the U.S. in a VW Westie. They acquired a large community of friends who also shared a love/hate relationship with those vehicles.

Karl is survived by his wife, Stephanie, parents Charles and Catherine, son Andrew (Tiffany), two grandchildren, a brother and two sisters, and nieces and nephews.

Services are June 30, 10:00am, at Ss. Simon & Jude Cathedral, 6531 N. 27th Ave., Phoenix. The family requests donations be made to Desert Botanical Garden, by calling 480-941-3517, and specifying the donation is in memory of Karl Wolz.

After all these years I can picture Karl, chino pants, a white short sleeve shirt, and his thick, toussled, wavy, unruly head of hair, with his signature black framed glasses...

Seems every other photo in the Ram Page was attributed to him. Thanks to Debbie Dorious we have his photo....!!!!!! Thank you.

Glad to see a photo of him here. I'd been looking for one to post. He was always behind the lens and very rarely in front of it and was a phenomenal photographer, a skill he learned from his father. They had a darkroom in a "fallout shelter" at the apartments they owned. His other passion was cycling. He and his wife had a tandem and they would go on some long marathon road trips with it. He not only had incredible stamina and endurance, he also had enormous strength. Karl could have been a velodrome sprinter had a velodrome been near enough. His thighs were strong enough to break chainstay weldments on a bicyle frame - which he did, IIRC, on a borrowed bicycle. I was surprised he didn't snap the chain. My brother, Jim, cycled with him in HS and has quite a few stories about Karl and their long rides.
