Carey and I were in a first year French class together in 1966-67.  I recall how he would arrive in class smile and say  "Bonjour." Some of the girls would respond with their own "Bonjour."  I envied his extroversion and his apparent self-confidence. Later he was over self-confidence when in the spring of 1968 he ran for student body president and broke the rules bu not sticking to the speech script that he had submitted to the administration for the assembly. The administration disqualified him.

I ran into Jim M. at Christown Mall in late August 1968 and Jim told me that Carey had died in a motorcycle accident. I remember Jim said, "It's hard to believe. We thought Carey would conquer the world." I thought of Carey's outward self confidence, and I agreed.

CAREY HACKIN WAS MY BEST FRIEND OUR JUNIOR YEAR.  HE WAS MY CHEMISTY LAB PARTNER IN MR. FAWCETT'S CLASS.  WE WERE BOTH FAILING BECAUSE CAREY WAS ALWAYS CLOWNING AROUND, I CAN STILL HEAR HIS VOICE "OH CAROL!"   MR. FAWCETT SAID HE WOULD PASS US IF WE CAME IN AFTER SCHOOL AND MAKE UP ALL OUR LABS!  WE DID, WE PASSED, & WE HAD MORE FUN LEARNING!  CAREY & I WERE ALSO IN THE FELLOWSHIP CLUB TOGETHER FOR SEVERAL YEARS WORKING MANY PROJECTS & GOING TO THE ANYTOWN, AZ. CAMP FOR "BROTHERHOOD".  HE WAS AN ODD JEW & I WAS AN ODD CHRISTIAN SCIENTIST.  IT WORKED.  I THINK I MIGHT HAVE BEEN HIS CAMPAIGN MANAGER FOR SCHOOL PRESIDENT FOR A SHORT TIME UNTIL HE FIGURED HE NEEDED SOMEONE STRONGER.  HE WOULD BE SOOO POLITICAL IF HE WERE STILL HERE!!!  HE GOT DISQUALIFIED FOR CALLING THE TEACHERS "PUPPETS" IN THE ADMINISTRATION. (PALES TO TODAYS POLITICS).   FORGIVE ME FOR NOT ENTERING THIS EARLIER.  IT'S BEEN HARD SEEING OUR OTHER CLASSMATES WHO HAVE PASSED ON BUT CAREY'S FUNERAL WAS MY FIRST AND DEVASTATED ME.  A POLICEMAN EVEN PULLED ME OVER WHEN I WAS TRYING TO DRIVE HOME.  CAREY WAS RIDING HIS SMALL MOTORCYCLE AROUND LAVEEN WHEN HE HIT A BIG (PRODUCE?) TRUCK SLIDING UNDER IT. YES, HE WOULD HAVE HAD A VERY BRIGHT FUTURE IN ANYTHING HE WOULD HAVE DONE, BUT SADLY  IT JUST DIDN'T GET TO BE.   I HAVE BEEN CHECKING ON MANY OF OUR OTHER FRIENDS WHO  HAVE PASSED ON AND TRIED TO GIVE MENTION TO THEIR CREDITS.... AND I CAN'T BELIEVE MORE THAN JUST 2 OF US HAVE ADDED COMMENTS.  MAYBE BECAUSE HE WAS THE BIGGEST ONE FOR US. LITTLE GUY, BIG HEART, HUGE PERSONALITY. I LOVED HIM DEARLY. HE IS STILL DEEPLY MISSED BY ME. CAROL HAZELETT

I met Carey by chance through another friend driving us home from school one day. I was taken with how sincerely friendly and genuinely interested Carey was in me. I was a nobody, not popular or pretty or important in anyway and woefully lacking self confidence. Carey asked me about my classes one of which was Latin with Ms. Ledyard. He asked me to say something in Latin so he could hear the accent. I explained that Latin was a dead language more written than spoken. Even that little encounter made me love and respect him. He was kind to everyone. I voted for him for class president. I have been thinking of Carey as our 50th reunion approaches. I'm so happy to share that even now, Carey lives on in our hearts. Carol, Tippy, & Roger, thanks for your posts about Carey. It brought back some happy memories I have of him. He was a wonderful, fun guy. I dated him at the end of junior year and through the summer. I was at Anytown when he went too. He came to my house to pick me up for prom, all dressed up in a tux & carrying a corsage, but he arrived a day EARLY! We had a good laugh over that. He called it one of his “Beaver Cleaver” moments. It is a tragedy that we lost him at such a young age. I am grateful that I got to know him.
