Seventh-grader Gina Berry won the Clay County Spelling Bee.
 

June 1977
Clay County 4-H members brought home trophies from the Horse and Pony Show in Forrest City. The winners included Tony Crittenden.

Dena Romine was second alternate in the Miss Pollard pageant. 
 

December 1977
Piggott Boy Scout Troop 46 recently hiked the 14-mile long Shiloh Trail in southern Tennessee. Those taking part included Keith Gill and Kurt Knauts.
 
Who's Who has been announced and Mr. and Miss Piggott Junior Mohawk went to Todd Litzelfelner and Sarah Wagster and Karen Williams.
 

March 1978
Congrats to Piggott's Gina Berry, she won the Clay County spelling bee for the second year in a row.

Next year's majorettes were introduced at the annual spring band concert, among them was Jill Miller.
 
Perfect attendance has been reported at PJHS. The eighth graders included Sherry Bradshaw, James O'Dell, Merry Romines, Sandra Templeton and Kenny Wright.
 

July 1978
PJHS cheerleaders attended camp at ASU recently, the squad included--Karen Williams, LaTraca Webster, Donna Burris, Penny Rogers, Becky Latimer and Polly Vaughn.
 
Tamara Holifield was named alternate in the Miss Pollard pageant.

In sports, PHS basketball players attended camp at ASU recently. They included Jimmy Ellis, Kenny Wright and Kurt Knauts.
  

September 1978
The Piggott Mohawks played the first game on the new Parker Field. The first junior high touchdown on the new field by a Mohawk was scored against Rector on Sept. 6 as Steven Wright made a touchdown in the 12-14 loss to the Black Cats.
 
An open house at the new Piggott High School was held this week as the new facility was opened to the public.  Class of 82 was the first class to go all 4 years at the new school.
 

April 1979
Piggott FFA judging teams did well at the district, and three teams qualified for state. The land judging team of Byron Williams (first overall), Jimmy Ellis, Timothy Fisk and Barry Magee.
 
Foreign Language week was observed at PHS; members were Shelly Runyon and Angie Mooney.
 

July 1979
The PHS Majorette line took first at a clinic at the University of Arkansas, Jill Miller was a member of the line.
 

August 1979
The PHS land judging team that won the state title last year, and competed in the national event at Oklahoma City, has been invited to compete at the Mid-South Fair this fall. Team members are Byron Williams, Barry Magee, Tim Fisk and Jim Ellis.

The Lady Mohawk volleyball team swept Walnut Ridge with senior high starters Celia Clemons, Sherri Mobley, Cyndy Reagan and Liz Janes
 

December 1979
Kevin Sutfin was a finalist for the king of the Sadie Hawkins week.
 

January 1980
The Lady Mohawks dropped a set to Marmaduke paced by Sherri Mobley for the varsity.
 
Kenny Wright led the Mohawks with 17 points to a victory over Highland.  The Tribe took the win over the Rebels, who were ranked #3 in the state in AA at the time, by a final of 41-38.
 

February 1980
Rexanna Montgomery was a member of the PHS basketball homecoming court.
 

March 1980

April 1980
The first-ever Mohawk baseball game was played April 1, 1980 as the Tribe dropped a 1-2 road loss in nine innings to the Hayti Indians. Later the Mohawks recorded their first ever win, as they posted a 10-3 victory over the North Pemiscot Mustangs at Wardell. Team team members included Kevin Sutfin, Jerry Clemons and Chuck Stark.
 

May 1980
Part of a two-man team, Jeff Peace competed in the state golf tournament.  Losing by one stroke to Jefferson Prep of Pine Bluff as they took second statewide in AA.
 

July 1980
Dena Romines was an alternate for the Miss Pollard pageant.
 
Karen Williams was Miss Piggott.
 

August 1980
Miss Clay County was held at the annual fair. The court included first alternate Karen Williams.
 

January 1981
Junior maid for the basketball homecoming royalty was Beth Hardcastle.
 
The PHS Cheerleaders brought home the second place trophy from summer clinic.  They included: Penny Rogers, Karen Williams, Becky Latimer and Donna Burris.
 
Co-captain of the Sr. Girls Cheerleaders was Polly Vaughn.
 
The senior high volleyball team's record was 8-2.  They placed 3rd in the district.  Erica Myra, Sherri Mobley, and Celia Clemons were amoung the team. 
 

July 1981
The Senior High Majorettes brought home the 1st place trophy.  Head majorette was Jill Miller.
 
This was the first year for Piggott High School Baseball.  Kevin Sutfin was amoung them.
 

December 1981
Piggott Marching Mohawks brought home 1st place trophy in the Christmas Parade held in Paragould with sub-freezing temperatures.
 

January 1982
Kenny Wright and Melanie Featherston were crowned basketball homecoming king and queen.
 
All district football players Tony Crittenden & Ricky Hurst were recognized along with honorable mention Jerry Clemons
  

In volleyball; Erica Myra was district pick.

 


March 1982

Senior Career Day was marked at PHS, Lance Cole spent the day as an employee of The Piggott Times.
 

May 1982
Mr. and Miss Beta was David Creek and Sherry Bradshaw.
 
The Mohawk golf team won the state AA championship. Team members included; Mack McFarlin, Kurt Knauts.  The team also won the district championship for the third time. Kurt Knauts shot a 79.
 
At the spring sports banquet, Mohawk athletes were honored.
  • In basketball, Kenny Wright had best field goal percentage and most rebounds; Kurt Knauts was given the defensive award and Gary Jordan was "most improved."
  • In tennis, Erica Myra was honored as the team's outstanding player, and for being district champion.
 
Mohawk baseball players named for All-District honors included; Jerry Clemons, Brian Vaughn and Kevin Sutfin.
 
This year's valedictorian was Gena Hester and the salutatorian was Shelley Runyon.
 
Graduation at PHS for the Class of 1982.  "Remember, don't throw your caps".
