I waited until maybe someone else who knew Pat better and/or longer than I did posted a memory of her, but the time has come.
My sister Kit Irwin Klaber '61 married Dave Klaber '62 and they raised their five children in Upper St.Clair in a neighborhood near Pat and Denny Phillips and Bruce McClintock. After my parents died and the Beverly Road house was sold, I would visit Kit and her family during the holidays or in the summer and stay at her house, rather than "my own." Imagine my surprise one day when Kit told me that the housekeeper was coming, and a few minutes later in walked Pat. To be honest, we were both caught off guard. We remembered each other instantly, and the words unspoken filled the air. We had not been good friends in high school but we knew each other through mutual friends. Kit had no idea we had been classmates at Lebo; Pat called her Mrs Klaber....
I don't remember the year Pat and I renewed our friendship but we looked forward to seeing each other and stayed in touch through the years. She is truly one of my heroes; she swam upstream against all odds. She was divorced and gave her whole life to her mother and her two sons - without reserve. The last time I saw her was at Kit's daughter Ketti's wedding in 1998. Her older son escorted her to the HYP Club in Pgh for the reception and she was seated with him and Tom and me at the bride's table; she looked beautiful and wore a smile that would light the world. She died of cancer after a painful illness several years ago. I am so grateful for her friendship.
