Sister Remigia Kushner says the Sisters of St. Joseph charism of unity has greatly influenced her 50 years of service in education.

"Belonging to something larger than yourself, knowing that everything is done in a context of drawing people together, enhancing dignity and knowing that your personal life touches the lives of others, has been most rewarding to me," she says.

Since 1990, Sister Remigia has been a professor and director of the Catholic School Administration Program at Manhattan College in the Bronx. She previously ministered as principal of Hilltop Catholic High School in Pittsburgh and a teacher at St. Raphael, St. Canice and Fonbonne Academy. In 1981, she began work at the Archdiocese of New York, serving as District Superintendent of Schools and Associate Superintendent of Schools.

Sister Remigia credits the Sisters who taught her at Mount Gallitzin High School for her decision to enter religious life. "The Sisters of St. Joseph have defined themselves through the important documents that call them to excellence, dignity and connectedness. These elements of our charism have influenced my work in education, and also those who have been touched by what the charism might mean in their own lives."
