PHHS 1960 Time capsule

NOT TO BE OPENED BEFORE 1995

May your saddest moments today be of your happiest memories of 1960

It is the year 1960 and our class is the first class that has completed a full three years at our new high school . We ' ve had great times here at P . H.H .S . and now that we start another chapter of our lives we wanted to jot down a few of our favorite spots . We hope this will bring back great memories and happy thoughts to all of you . POWERS , can cruising be any better than this ???
( wonder if they will still cruise like this and what the cars will look like in 1995) . We sure can go a long ways on 50 cents worth of gas. All our Ford ' s and Chevy's will be long gone, but the guys know how to make them "real cool” with full moon hubcaps and bubble skirts . Those hot summer days at NEW BALTIMORE DRAG STRIP. Wow! What a thrill to see the souped - up hot rods flying down the strip at a w i ld 80 miles an hour . Wonder how fast they will be going in "95" ? We sure have some "bad" cars in this little city. The guys know how to make them fast and loud. The local guys have their own drag strip on Vincent Road; sure hope the police never find out about it, o r else there will there will be some 'hot' parents. We really have some neat hang-outs: theres TED'S DRIVE-IN, they have the best cheeseburgers in the town, A & W for foot-long hot dogs and iced-mug root beer, the best pizza has to be SAFFEE'S and to see and to be seen, MANIS'S, where all the "older crowd" hangs out. Marysville's BIG BOY, now that's a Big Hamburger! The hot dogs at CONEY ISLAND, BOOM BOOM DRIVE-IN, CHICKEN-IN-THE-ROUGH, SAM AND JOE'S, RICKY'S DRIVE-IN, and LONDON'S DAIRY. There is a new drive-in that has just opened up, it's called BURGER-CHEF over on Pine Grove and George Udell said you can get a burger, fries, and a shake for 15° each; bet that place is going to make it. Downtown Port Huro n is the place to be on Saturdays. DIANA SWEET'S has basketburgers and cherry cokes, and the downtown stores carry all the latest fashions for us. Winkelman's, Arden's, Ballentines, and Sperry's and the guys shop at Andy Thomas's, George Innes's, and Shaker Touma, I suppose our clothes will really be out-dated when this is read, but we sure think we look cool in our fur-blend sweaters, our tennis shoes that have 20 coats of white shoe polish on them, and our tan trench coats with raccoon collars. The guys in their khaki trousers with the buckle in the back; if it is buckled, hands off, he's going steady!!! Clamdiggers and bleeding madras bermuda shorts and for the big dances corduroy suits with penney loafers and white socks-they are just "so fine." Our newest 45's and HI FI LP'S can be bought at Jerry Ritters on Military (Yukon 5-7148). Listening to Tom Shannon on CKLW and our own local station WALS with Fat Jack Shannon. We like to play our music loud and our parents do nothing but complain about it; we'll sure be different when we become parents??? Good Ole Rock and Roll will it ever die like they keep predicting? Where will our great singers be? Elvis, Fat's, Pat Boone, Platters, Chubby Checkers, Little Richard, Chuck Berry, WOW! There are way too many to list all the fine singers that are coming from this time frame. Our music is the best and we hope we will still be dancing to it on our 35th reunion. Bob Mcvety Youth Center is still a pretty neat spot to get in some dancing or a game of pool upstairs. The guys stay on the second floor and us girls stick to the first. The Port Huron High School guys like to hang out at th e Military Billiards playing pool and pin ball; the guys from St. Stephens hang out at that "other place." They say a. new spot is going to open up real soon north of town and its going to be called The Dome. We need a new place to hang out, sure hope this place will turn out to be a new meeting place for us and it doesn't fade into the past like so many of our great spots. If you want to get in some roller skating, head to Lakeport. They have a pretty big crowd on a Friday and Saturday nights. Lots of the gang have their own roller skates and they have those big tassels on the toes. They look pretty neat. We've got a new sports arena, McMorran, and we're suppose to get our own hockey team called the Flags. This sport is one that is really going to catch on around here. When fall time comes, we head out to Ford's Dam (good thing we never got caught out there, we could have gotten into serious trouble) or just hiking through Beard's Hill on a Sunday afternoon. The famous Swinging Bridge in Croswell is always a neat place to goof around. I don't think any of us actually have fallen off that thing, but the guys sure like to scare us girls on it. Football games in Pine Grove Park and dancing at Lakeside at the concession stand on Saturday nights or maybe just parking at Lakeside and watching the waves ( yeah, right!). Lots of winter nights were spent at Palmer Park, but we didn't feel the cold as we glided on the ice. Marysville and on
en Lakeshore Drive-in's are always a good Saturday night date place for a first run movie, Psycho and Midnight Lace are two real good thrillers that are showing. We're sure there were many other places in your memories, but we hope these few will bring back some happy thoughts for you on this day. Our city will have changed in the 35 years since we have written this. Let's hope that both our city and our lives will reach their goals of success and happiness tomorrow. Til we meet again, good health and happiness to all our classmates of the year 1960.
