Arthur I. Burgess

A memorial service for Arthur I. Burgess, 65, of Sagamore Beach, a retired social studies and driver education teacher at North Quincy High School, was held at Wollaston Baptist Church.  Mr. Burgess died on March 29, 1987, in Plymouth after a long illness.

He lived in Braintree and Quincy before moving to Sagamore Beach.

Mr. Burgess served on a committee under President Eisenhower’s Safety Education Program, preparing material used as criteria in a national driver education program.

He was a teacher at North Quincy High School for 32 years before he retired because of illness in 1980.

A 1940 graduate of Thayer Academy, he was also graduated from Colgate University in 1943 and received a master’s degree in education from Boston University.

Mr. Burgess served in World War II with the 69th Infantry Division and the Judge Advocate General in the European Theater of Operations.

He is survived by his wife M. Louise (Evans) Burgess, a son John E. Burgess of Phoenix, a daughter, Cynthia Leone of Sagamore, a brother Donald W. Burgess of Wollaston, a sister, Martha B. Brumgardner of Kingston, and a granddaughter, Kristen Leone of Sagamore.
