Happy birthday Karen, hope you have a great one & many more.
Happy Birthday, Jane!
I went to the viewing today, so sad. Half of a great team is gone. There were three big boards of pictures, and one was a picture of the Douglas Car Wash softball team, of which Gary was member, when they were first at the nationals. I was on a team that played them once (thank God only once), and they crushed us. I knew a few of the team members, including Gary, and I was so embarrassed that I went to Shoenerts (spelling?) to drown my sorrows. Gary came in, and never said a word about the game, but several times he looked at me with a big smile, and shook his head.
I used to shoot hoops with Gary at the Boys and Girls Club by Park, often until the janitor kicked both of us out on Saturdays.
The basket was a few feet off the wall and Gary, not being the tallest in the class, would run at the wall, then walk up the wall in apparent defiance of gravity. When he was high enough, Gary would spring off the wall to a point just under the rim. Then he would dunk it.
Nothing less than amazing. He was probably the best athlete in the school. And a really nice guy. Condolences to his family.
