She Looked Fear in the Eye

Elisabeth Hayes Permar Ham died at Duke University Hospital, Wednesday, February 24, 2010.

Lisa was born in Washington, DC, on April 18, 1970; she and her parents David and Ann Permar moved to Raleigh in 1972. She graduated from Broughton High School (1988), UNC-Chapel Hill (1992), and later received her Masters of Education Administration from Campbell University.

After college Lisa worked at the YMCA as a youth director, where her immediate supervisor, Bruce Ham, fell in love with her and asked her to marry him. At the Y she was instrumental in expanding the North Carolina Youth Legislature program, which serves teens from across the state. Lisa joined the staff of St. Timothy's School in 1994, and served as its Director of Development for 14 years, successfully coordinating the school's capital campaign for expansion and improvement of facilities.

A consummate volunteer, Lisa held several leadership positions in the Junior League of Raleigh, and served on the board of Playspace. Her commitment to First Presbyterian Church was evident through her deep level of involvement. Most recently she served on the Long-Range Planning and Building Committees, and as a Deacon. Lisa loved music and shared that love through her service as co-director of the Children's Choir. In all of her work Lisa was often the driving force to move a project forward to its successful conclusion, never seeking personal credit.

Lisa and Bruce have three daughters, Elisabeth Bailey (12), Lucy Powell (9), and Ann Truluck (7). Lisa wanted her girls to be poised and confident, to be considerate of other people, and to serve their community. She loved them as the unique individuals that they are. Lisa was a wonderful sister to Hayes Permar, Sallie Permar and her husband Matt Ferraguto, and she took great delight in her nephew Sam. She was the heartbeat of her entire family and they will miss her terribly. Some of their most poignant memories of Lisa will be during annual trips to Capon Springs & Farms, WV, and to Topsail Beach, NC. You've never experienced Disney World until you've traveled there with Lisa!

Please join the family at the Ham's home at 1531 Dellwood Drive, Saturday evening, February 27, 2010, from 5:00-8:30 PM. A celebration of Lisa's life will be held at First Presbyterian Church in Raleigh at 2:00 PM, Sunday, February 28, 2010. Memorial gifts may be made to St. Timothy's School Capital Campaign, 4523 Six Forks Road, Raleigh, NC 27609, or to First Presbyterian Church Building Fund, 120 West Hargett Street, Raleigh, NC 27601.

Arrangements by Bryan-Lee Funeral Home, Raleigh.
