AUCKERMAN, Charles "Chuck" Lewis, 59, of Bridgewater, Va., passed away at home on Tuesday, July 28, 2009. Born on April 11, 1950 in Richmond, Va., he was the son of the late Urick and Jessie Auckerman of Richmond. Chuck graduated from Virginia Polytechnic Institute in 1972 and worked at the Department of Environmental Quality, Water Division, previously the State Water Control Board, for over 25 years. All his life he was passionate about the environment. He was an avid gardener who cared about the preservation of native plant species and was active in the local chapter of the Native Plant Society. He was also a respected birder who belonged to the Rockingham Bird Club, where he organized the annual Christmas Bird Count. He enjoyed motorcycling in his free time and took several long trips across the continent. He married Suzanne Payne on June 11, 1977 at Massanetta Springs outside Harrisonburg, Va. Surviving with his wife of over 30 years are one daughter, Eliza Auckerman of Arlington, Va.; one son, Colin Auckerman of Charlottesville, Va.; and a sister, Ann Jackson of Mechanicsville, Va. He was preceded in death by his sister, Shirley Chenault of Richmond, Va. A memorial service will be held at a later date. The family will receive visitors on Saturday, August 1, 2009, from 2 to 4 p.m. at the Johnson Funeral Service in Bridgewater.
