The photos below are of all the nuns who were at Mercy during our four years.  (They may have been at Mercy for more years than noted, we've listed only the years we attended.)  We've also listed the subjects they taught during that time, which may have varied from year to year. Though most have passed, there are a number who are still active and whom we intend to invite to share in our reunion. We have noted their status as deceased, active or in assisted living, beneath their pictures.  We thank Sister Madeline Moore (Stanislaus) for taking the time to provide all the updates, contact information and dates of death. We have included contact information for the sisters who are still active, in the event that any members of our class would like to contact them.

She earned a bachelor’s degree in education from St. John’s University in Brooklyn, New York, and a master’s degree in education from Marywood College in Scranton, Pennsylvania.

When her sister died leaving young children. Dot took on the role of ‘mother’ until their young lives could be settled. Her many years of service in the field of education began at St. Therese of Lisieux in Brooklyn, New York, where she taught both in the 1940s and ‘60s and where she eventually served as principal for 12 years. Other schools that benefitted from her educational wisdom were St. Agatha, St. Brigid, and Catherine McAuley High School, all in Brooklyn, and St. Patrick’s in Bay Shore, New York, and Mercy High School in Riverhead, New York.

After her retirement, Dot lived at the Convent of Mercy, Brooklyn, and later moved to Marian Woods in Hartsdale, New York, where she formed new relationships with sisters from the several communities that lived there.

Her final days were spent at Maria Regina Residence in Brentwood, New York, where she was fully resigned to the frailties of her 97 years. Her motto was “My heart is restless until it rests in you.” She peacefully went into the arms of Jesus to quell her “restless heart,” finally resting in him.

Sister Mary Dorothea Gillen

Junior Sacristans ('66-'69)
Deceased 08/31/2021  At Age 95

Sister Mary Dorothea, whose mother died when she was very young, grew up in St. Agatha's Parish in Brooklyn, NY with her beloved father.  After attending Mercy Juniorate High School she entered the Sisters of Mercy on February 2, 1944.  Sister Dorothea was an educator in elementary and high schools for 36 years in the Dioceses of Brooklyn and Rockville Centre.  Her ministry as hospital prison chaplain for the NYS Department of Corrections enabled her to accompany many who were dying of AIDS at the time.  This was followed by five years as a unit supervisor in the Brooklyn Supportive Living Program and eight years as property manager for Mercy Gardens, a Catholic Charities single-room-occupancy residence in Brooklyn.  The name Dorothea means "Gift of God."  Truly, Sister Mary Dorothea was a gift of God in every aspect of her life and to those for whom, and with whom, she ministered.  Her motto, "Be faithful through love," dominated her life.  What she did pales in comparison to the person she was - a woman of quiet, deep, selfless love extended to everyone crossing her path.  She will be truly missed by her sisters in community.
