Shooting victim, ex-spouse identified

Coroner's officials released the name of a man who killed his ex-wife Sunday night outside a Riverside bank and later turned the gun on himself.
The dead man was identified as Gary Nickel, 47, of Riverside. Police said he fatally shot Olga Nickel, 46, outside the Bank of America parking lot near the Galleria at Tyler.
The murder-suicide occurred shortly after the couple had dinner at a restaurant, said Riverside Police Sgt. Mark Boyer.
"There was some sort of argument over the relationship," Boyer said of the couple, who divorced in July.
Boyer said police went to the parking lot at Magnolia Avenue and Tyler Street at 8:11 p.m. Sunday after receiving calls about shots being fired. They found Olga Nickel's body slumped in the front seat of her burgundy Ford Aerostar. Firefighters had to break the window to get her out, he said.
"It looks like he picked her up and somehow put her in the (van) and locked it," Boyer said. "He then went to his daughter's house and told her in person what he had done to her mother. Then he went to the pay phone and telephoned his (younger) daughter."
The couple's son-in-law said his wife told him her father went to her home and then left. The woman called police after her father left her home, and told them that her father was suicidal.
Police searching the area for the man's maroon Buick Riviera spotted it near California Avenue by Shelby Drive.
"He still pulled over," said Boyer. "He still complied with us even though he had done all that."
Gary Nickel shot himself as officers waited for backup, before they ordered him out of the car, Boyer said. "He was extremely despondent."
