Trilby Garst

Trilby Ann Meador Garst, 91, of Spartanburg, S.C., and formerly of Roanoke, Va., passed away on Saturday, June 28, 2008, at Eden Terrace Assisted Living in Spartanburg, S.C. Born October 28, 1916, in Roanoke, Va., she was the daughter of the late Walter A. and Nonie Humbert Meador. She was predeceased by her husband of 59 years, Wallace Benjamin Garst, and three brothers, Maurice, Cecil and Wreford Meador. Trilby graduated from Jefferson High School and received an associate degree of liberal arts from Virginia Intermont College where she studied organ and piano. She was a church organist for most of her life, having served several churches in the Roanoke area including Central Church of the Brethren of which she was a lifetime member.
Trilby was an active member of the Virginia Federation of Music Clubs in Roanoke since joining as a teenager in the Junior Clubs. During her membership she served as a group director, on committees, and in almost every office including President of the Thursday Morning Music Club, the largest music club in Virginia.
Trilby was also employed by the Roanoke County Schools as a driver's education teacher for 15 years.
Survivors include two sons, Wallace Benjamin (Ben) Garst Jr. and his wife, Starla, of Livermore, Calif., and Larry Wiley Garst and his wife, Rita, of Cary, N.C., and Roanoke, Va.; a daughter, Patricia Hevener and her husband, Marvin, of Spartanburg, S.C.; five grandchildren, Matthew Garst and his fiancée, Aleisha Schmollinger, Rachel Garst Page and her husband, Ken, all of Livermore, Calif., David Hevener, of Santa Fe, N.M., Laura Garst, of Wilmington, N.C., and Andrew Hevener and his fiancée, Brooke Frazer, of Durango, Colo.; and several nieces and nephews.
Trilby will be most remembered for her love of music, her strong fun-loving spirit and her radiant smile. 
Her family would like to thank the staff at Eden Terrace for their sincere, wonderful and loving care of Trilby for the past five years.
Funeral services will be held noon on Saturday, July 5, 2008, at Central Church of the Brethren conducted by Pastor Tim Harvey. The family will receive friends prior to the service beginning at 10:30 a.m. Burial will follow at Fair View Cemetery.
