William Joseph ‘Bill’ Maurer Jr.

A memorial service will be at 11 a.m. Saturday at First Presbyterian Church of Durango for William Joseph Maurer Jr., who died Wednesday, June 20, 2001, at his home in Durango after an extended battle with cancer. He was 50.

The Rev. Bill Postler will officiate at the service. A graveside ceremony will be conducted at 10 a.m. Saturday at Greenmount Cemetery by the Durango Elks Lodge.

Mr. Maurer was born Jan. 8, 1951, in Pittsburgh. He married Denise Truitt on Sept. 24, 1983, in Colorado Springs.

Mr. Maurer graduated from Rochester High School in Michigan, attended the University of Michigan and graduated from Regis College in Denver. He worked on a master’s degree at the University of Colorado at Denver and was a fraternal member of Phi Epsilon.

The Maurers moved to Durango in December 1995. Mr. Maurer worked as a banker at Wells Fargo. He was a member of the Durango Elks Lodge and High Noon Rotary. He was a former Toastmaster.

He is survived by his wife, Denise, of Durango; two children, Pamela and Drew Maurer of Durango; parents, William Joseph and Gayle B. Maurer of Rochester Hills, Mich.; a grandmother, Eugenia Dolores Maurer of Santa Maria, Calif.; sisters, Michelle Sherrill-Mix of Alpena, Mich., Stephanie Rupp of Lake Orion, Mich., and Andrea Maurer of New Hope, Penn.; a brother, Jeffrey Maurer of Rochester Hills, Mich.; and several aunts, uncles, nieces and nephews.

I remember the tallest guy in our class whos smile and wit were pure genuine. You could always count on Billie Boy for a laugh and to turn your down days into brighter ones . RIP my friend...

Oh how I looked forward to seeing Bill at our reunion.  To know that he is gone just breaks my heart.  Many tears have been she'd.  My mother used to drive me crazy talking about him.  She wanted us to be more than good friends, I didn't.  He was such a wonderful friend and great person. It

Dawn Hurley (Laatz)

He was a great friend.  I miss our late night conversations when he couldn't sleep and I was still up working on the computer.  He died way too soon.
