Obituary

Joan Elizabeth Lagassee (Kruse), 78, of Hillsdale, passed away peacefully at her home on Tuesday, May 26, 2020 with her daughters by her side. She was born May 26, 1942 in Lakewood, Ohio to John and Juanita (Collinson) Kruse. Joan married Michael Lagassee on February 16, 1967. He preceded her in death on April 10, 2016.

Joan was born and raised in Rocky River, OH where she valued her friends and community. Upon graduating from Rocky River High School, Joan pursued and received her Bachelor’s of Arts degree in Education from Hillsdale College https://www.hillsdale.edu/. She was able to put her degree to work teaching in the Hillsdale Community Schools for nearly 30 years. Upon retirement she worked in the library at The Hillsdale Academy and put her organizational skills to task by planning special events for the school. She poured all of her wisdom and love into her students; to this day students share that they value what she taught them.

Not only did she enjoy pouring her heart into the schools, but she also left her mark on many organizations in the Hillsdale Community. She was a member of the Hillsdale First Presbyterian Church, the Hillsdale Woman’s Club, and the Hillsdale Garden Club. Joan also was a member of the Board of Women’s Commissioners and the Kappa Kappa Gamma sorority at Hillsdale College.

Her smile set her apart and her face lit up when she spoke of her two daughters. Catherine (Frank) Lagassee Cyrus and Karen (Christopher) Lagassee Wright were blessed to have a mother who was an exceptional example to them. She was loved and is survived by her five grandchildren, Cameron and Joseph Cyrus and Elijah, Jaxson and Lagassee Wright.

In addition to her husband, of nearly 50 years, Joan was predeceased by her parents and brother, John Kruse.

A celebration of life service for Joan Lagassee will take place at a later date at Hillsdale First Presbyterian Church. Arrangements are entrusted to VanHorn-Eagle Funeral Home in Hillsdale.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions can be made to the Joan Lagassee Scholarship Fund at Hillsdale College. Contributions can be sent to Hillsdale College 33 East Street Hillsdale, MI 49242.

I'm so sorry to hear of Joan's passing. She was always happy and so friendly. Joan had the best slumber parties and was the life of the party, entertaining us with all the songs she knew. There were the cadence songs sung while walking and her terrific imitation of Elvis Presley. I still have a four leaf clover that I found in her front lawn the morning after one of her slumber parties. She was indeed special and one of a kind so I know her family will miss her greatly.       Love Marty Dean Wilson

I just learned of the death of my friend, and dance partner, from long ago. This is truly a heartbreaker. God bless Joan - you were one of a kind.

Joan Kruse and I began as classmates at Kensington Elementary School. As a kid who was terrified of girls all the way through high school, I always viewed Joan as exceptionally friendly and approachable, a memory that was confirmed when I spoke with her and her parents at one of our class reunions. I'm especially sorry to learn of her passing.
