Journalist/critic since 1971, full-time film and book critic at the Times since 1977. Last summer I decided to stop working at that breakneck pace and expected to leave altogether. But I was lucky enough to be offered a part-time arrangement, and I'm now able to make my own much lighter schedule. It's a great compromise. I can travel a lot, see my boys easily--and, best of all, really enjoy their company. The whole extended family will have just gotten back from Peru at Reunion time.
