Betty Staley put many hours into THE ROCK section in The Courier Times. She would be there in the press room long after others had left.

I remember her laugh and love of the French language.

She passed away while living in France in the late '90s. She will be missed but not forgotton because as a teacher she passed her zest for life on to her students.

Au revoir mon amie

Betty was such a sweet girl. She loved French and constantly tried to pursuade me to take French instead of Spanish. I will always remember her sweet smile and disposition. You will be missed, Betty Jo!

I will always remember Betty! We went to school together from the time we were at Oak Lane Elem. through Person and attented Clement Baptist Church together. She was the sweetest most thoughtful person and she got that honest from her parents. We will miss her!

One thing I remember about Betty is that she may well have been the nicest person I ever met. I never heard her say a bad thing about anyone. We had a few classes together including driver's ed. I remember when we first were doing the road part of it, that she would often end up w/ her arms crossed after doing a turn. I still do not understand how that happened, but I thought it was funny. I would talk about it with "the guys" in our classes. That was until the day she told me that it hurt her feelings. I felt like such a jerk because, well, Betty really was just that nice of a person. Anyway, the world is a lot worse off without her in it.

Betty was a true friend of mine from 2nd grade on. She was so sweet and kind. Betty was always one of the smartest if not THE smartest in the class. Straight A's were quite normal for her. One funny story I remember is during Art class at Oak Lane She and I had drawn a picture of Wonder Woman together. Of couse all the boys had a crush on WW back then in the 70's. I used bold blue and red permanent markers to color it and it bled through to the wooden desk permantly. We laughed about that the rest of the year. After we started Jr. High I never had many more classes with her due to her academic level being far greater than mine. We continued to remain friends however at church in our Youth group. I remember so much of her laugh and smile. She always made me feel good cause she would just roll at my jokes. Somehow I could always make her laugh to the point of tears. After graduation I lost contact with her. I remember seeing her wedding pic in the paper and that she was living in France. I was happy for her and looked forward to possibly seeing her at the 10 year. I got the news of her passing while I was in Georgia for Law Enforcement Training in 1997. I couldn't believe it. It still saddens me to this day. I will always cherish my time with her at school but especially the time we spent together in Youth group learning about and accepting Christ together. I believe she would definatley be making a positve impact on this world if she were still here today.

My memories of Betty are from Southern Jr High, she was my science partner. I remember how smart she was and now I am glad I had her as a partner. She is the reason I passed the class I am sure.

Betty and I became good friends in high school and continued through college. Everyone is correct, she was the nicest person ever. One day me, Melissa Evans, and Betty piled into my old car and headed to Durham to the movies. She had accidentally cut her leg on my car getting in the backseat, she didn't make a sound and didn't even complain. We didn't even know she was injured until she started to pass out from the blood loss! All she said was she didn't want to make a fuss about it. I can honestly say that whenever I think about her, I feel nothing but goodness in my heart.

Got the news via email when she passed in France, have to say I was totally shocked and cried over my keyboard.

I miss you Betty.
