Larry Norby

Larry Neil Norby, 71, of Rupert, passed away Saturday, May 10, 2008, at St. Alphonsus Hospital in Boise.

Larry was born Aug. 23, 1936 in Rupert, to Martin Otto and Phyllis Bixler Norby.  He married Joan Ramstedt, Aug. 11, 1956.  He was a life-long resident of Rupert.  In 1954, he graduated from Rupert High School.  He played football as a half back for the University of Idaho Vandals and was a member of the Sigma Nu Fraternity, where he graduated in 1958, with a BS in Education.

After graduating from the U of I, Larry returned to Rupert to farm and to teach.  He taught and coached for the Minidoka County Schoolo District at Washington School, Minico High School and East Minico Jr. High.  Upon his retirement from education, Larry continued his love of farming and was honored to share the Farmer of the Year Award with Jeff, his son-in-law.

He was a member of the Rupert Elks Lodge, member of the U of I Vandal Boosters, and past Board member of United Co-op.

Ever the expert at hunting, fishing, checkers, or cards, Larry taught his grandchildren and those special old friends how to play the game.  Larry impressed upon his grandchildren the importance of education and was very proud of their many academic and athletic accomplishments.

Larry is survived by his spouse, Joan; son, Bryan (Susan) Norby of Boise and their children, Michael and Taylor; daughter, Laura (Jeff) Clark of Rupert and their children, Neil and Brad; sisters, Sharon Speedy of Mt. Vernon, Wash., and Anita Morfin of Rupert; aunt, Marie Norby of Rupert; and foster son, Dennis Hunter of Utah.

He was preceded in death by his parents; one sister, Connie Norby Davis; and two infant brothers.

Funeral services were held at 11 a.m. Thurs., May 15, 2008, at Hansen Mortuary Chapel, 710 6th ., Rupert with Rand Fagg, Episcopal Priest, officiating. 

In lieu of flowers, donations could be made to the U of I Athletic Scholarship Fund, the U of I Sigma Nu Fraternity or charity of choice.
