Sacramento sheriff's detectives suspect a south Sacramento man of torching his apartment early Sunday and going on a shooting rampage that left a couple dead and two others clinging to life.
Witnesses and friends of the victims were stunned by the apparently petty motive that triggered the violence, saying a man shot and critically wounded two strangers who declined to give him a cigarette at a Valero gas station.
Detectives believe that minutes later, the same man crossed a grassy field and killed a couple -- his friends -- who owed him about $200.
Jay Patrick Johnson, 38, was arrested at 10:39 a.m. Sunday -- about 10 hours after the shootings -- on suspicion of two counts of homicide and one of burglary and arson.
Sacramento Sheriff's Sgt. Tim Curran said Sunday afternoon that Johnson hadn't been charged with the Valero gas station shootings, but that detectives are continuing to investigate. Officers believe he shot two men at the station at 65th Street and Stockton Boulevard, about two blocks from the scene of the double homicide.
The Sacramento County Coroner's Office identified one homicide victim as Ramona Alice Gonzales, 48, but did not release the name of the 25-year-old man who apparently lived with her at the Continental Terrace apartments.
Curran said all the violence occurred just after midnight.

Ramona was one of my first new friends at John Still, she was so sweet, and I still remember her giggling type of laugh. Such a senseless loss.
