Jeffrey was very special to me throughout my high school years. I was very sad when I heard that he passed away.

Jeff died in 1975, the year that my first child was born and if I remember correctly it was in September. Someone else may know the exact date. I know that after high school he moved with his parents and sister to Idaho where he was working at a gas station. He came to the 5th year reunion but that was the last one he attended.

I will truly miss Jeff; he was one of a kind with a wild spirit but a wonderful heart. My first experience with Jeff was back at Joaquin Miller in the 7th grade when he offered to sell me a student body card for 25 cents. (The originally purchased price would have been 50 cents but Jeff somehow was able to appropriate them at no cost…) Later at McClatchy I had the opportunity of having him in an Art class. Oh, he was so talented, he wanted to be an architect but his dreams would be cut short. He would always get mad at me because I would get an A on my Art projects and he would get a B+, not that I was better at Art but the teacher would grade on potential. Jeff’s Art work was far better then mines but the teacher realized early on that she would need to set a higher standard for Jeff in order for him to get an A in her class (Jeff and I both agreed this was not fair).

The last time I saw Jeff was at our five-year reunion. It was still the 70s and he had let his red hair and beard grow out but it was the same Jeff I knew so long ago. He gave me a bear hug at that time. I was looking forward to seeing him at other reunions but that would not be . . . miss you Jeff.

I have known Jeffrey Yates, since Joaquin Miller, Junior High School. Him and I were fierce competitors in the 100 yard dash. Were both vying a spot on the track team for the 100 yard dash. He beat me out by a mega second. I am saddened about His passing. Dr Edward Maurice Vermette PsyD

Jeffery was a true friend since we met in 4th grade. We shared many good times together and I miss him even today he comes to mind.

About 3 years ago, we were on a family trip to Sandpoint, Idaho and by some miracle a family member had dinner with Jeff's sister and husband. I was able to connect with her by phone and we had a wonderful conversation. I had not seen Sandy since probably 1968 and since Jeff had passed in 1975 I had wanted to connect with her. On this trip to Sandpoint Sandy and I had a heartfelt but uplifting luncheon where she showed me pictures of Jeff in the years after they had moved to Idaho. I brought pictures that I had of Jeff and after lunch we went to Sandys house where she had all of his amazing artwork!!! I took pictures of much of his artwork and Sandy and I tried to figure out who the pictures were of as there were a few of teenage girls. One kind of looked like me and like Sandy. Another one was of a very beautiful girl. Anyway it was awesome to catch up with her and she answered some of my questions that I needed answered about Jeff. He passed away before his twins, a boy and a girl, were born. Sandy does not have a connection with the twins. Jeff will always be missed by many. It was a huge loss that he passed in 1975.
