Stanley Walter Dison Stanley Walter Dison passed away on Thursday, June 30, 2011. He was born October 26, 1919 in Turlock, California. After being raised and graduating from high school in Oakland, California he attended and graduated from Chico State College. When World War II broke out, he joined the US Coast Guard, which was part of the Navy during the war. Soon after his first assignment, he was sent to the Coast Guard Academy in New London, Connecticut where he graduated as an Ensign and was assigned LST duty in the South Pacific. He participated in sixteen invasions, including the liberation of the Philippines and eventually became a Lieutenant (senior grade) and commanded his own LST, bringing it back from the Pacific to Houston for decommissioning. After the war, Stanley met and married the love of his life Peggy Akard, and they were married for almost 65 years. He began his teaching career school in a little Northern California mining town where he also coached football, basketball, and baseball. After one year, he and Peggy moved to Sacramento where he taught in junior and senior high schools for 31 years, assisted with many sports, was head basketball coach, department chairman, and athletic director. He later served the district as Hearing Officer. Stanley is survived by his wife Peggy, son Thomas (Ana) Dison of Austin, and daughter Marjorie Robinson of South Carolina; grandchildren Jennifer Wolfe, Eric (Leah) Magouirk, Kevin Magouirk, and Jonathan (Susan) Dison; and great-grandchildren Bridgit Wolfe, Jake Dison and Lucy Dison. Stanley was an avid sportsman and golfer in Sacramento where he was a member of Valley Hi and El Macero country clubs. He and Peggy traveled extensively in many countries in Europe, Asia, and Africa. They also enjoyed golf trips to England, Ireland, Scotland, Spain, Portugal and Kuala Lumpur-as well as bi-yearly treks to Hawaii. In 1995, he and Peggy moved to Austin to be near family. There he continued his golfing as a member of Balcones CC and followed UT athletics. Honoring Stanley's wishes, no services will be held. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the charity of your choice or the Thomas W. Dison Endowed Scholarship at the University of Texas at Austin.
