A couple years after graduating I went to work at the school district's administration building and, for a time, got to know Bill pretty well. For me, I felt immediately comfortable calling him "Bill".

He was constantly friendly, willing to chat, and I never once felt any barrier due to age difference or life experience. I appreciated that at age 20 - the fact that a guy who was once my high school principal could now treat me as an equal, even though we were each at very different places in life.

I clearly remember our many chats in the office mailroom about baseball. He knew his stuff. I've thought about those quite often over the ensuing years.

A good guy. Proud of his family. Fair. Decent. Available. Ready to listen respectfully to a 20-year old mailroom clerk while showing me better ideas about most everything. He remained a teacher long after leaving the confines of a classroom. A leader and an example. I admired him. Still do and always have.

I don't have to miss him. Those brief times we shared have never left me.

And, Bill, you changed my mind about the proper way to advance a runner from second with nobody out. A hundred times since, whenever I preach the gospel of "hit it on the ground to the right side", it's your voice I'm hearing while I myself now talk to a 20-year old kid sitting next to me at a game. Thanks.

Mr Morgan was one of those people who had an effect on a whole bunch of us. Normally me and my pals were up to see him because we were in trouble for some offense. What I remember and now can appreciate is how he would never give up on you. He had high expectations even when you probably didnt deserve them.

I had a chance to talk to him a couple of years ago. I was in town to celebrate at a reunion for the 1966-67 basketball championship we won our sophmore year. We had a pretty good group including coach Coombs. Mr Morgan showed up and I was amazed even at his advance age how much he remembered about our class. I am glad I had that opportunity to thank him for all he did for me.

We all owe him.

Bill Morgan was good to everyone. If you remember, when we did our Rally skits and we needed to have one of our players portray Mr. Morgan, all we did was put someone behind a desk and have him bellow out, "The kids at McClatchy are the GREATEST!" Everyone knew we were imitating Mr. Morgan. What a fabulous man, supporter of young people, educator, friend/pal to soooo many. Mr. Morgan, YOU were the GREATEST!
