Roger Swearingen (Teacher)

SWEARINGEN, Roger Kent Jan 18, 1940 - Feb 26, 2015 Beloved husband of Joan Swearingen, loving father of Kristen Beckner (Steve) and Cheryl Barnhart (Jason). Cherished grandfather of Grace, Mackenzie, and Connor. Also survived by his brother Stanley Swearingen and numerous nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his sister Virginia Gallagher, and his parents Addison and Louise Swearingen. Roger was born in Sheridan, Wyoming. At 2 years of age, the family moved to Sacramento. Eventually, Roger and Joan moved to raise their daughters in Elk Grove where he resided until his death. Roger is a graduate of McClatchy High School, UC Davis with a BA, and CSUS with a Masters. He had a wonderful 39 year career in Sacramento City Schools as a loved and respected educator. Roger and Joan celebrated their 50th anniversary last July 27. Roger most loved Jesus Christ and his family. He is best known for his ability to make any stranger a friend, his encouraging words, his jovial spirit, his determination and hard work, and his warm cheerful smile. Roger loved playing, coaching, and watching many sports - especially football and baseball. He was an avid reader of history and politics. Roger's greatest joy in life was spending time with his wife, children, grandchildren, extended family, and friends. He truly was the definition of a people person. Visitation will be held on Sunday March 8, 2015 from 1:00 pm to 5:00 pm at East Lawn Elk Grove Mortuary located at 9189 East Stockton Blvd. in Elk Grove, CA 95624 (916) 732-2031. Funeral Services will be held on Monday March 9, 2015 at 11:00 am at First Baptist Church of Elk Grove located at 8939 East Stockton Blvd. Elk Grove, CA 95624. Sometimes I do not remember people for whom credit is due. I am not going to let this opportunity slip away.All I want to do is say farewell to Coach Roger Kent Swearingen, an admired coach, educator, family man, and friend of mine.
