Like a lot of you I knew Doug, can't say we were friends. He bloodied my nose, a fracas we got into over who knows what. Shortly after I was asked to leave HJ, unrelated to what transpired twixt Doug and I. Never saw him after that. But I thought about him a lot. Every nosebleed there after, from flag football games, rugby matches, softball games or a couple of dust ups in the Navy. Weird to associate Doug with my nose being to weekend, but there it is. RIP Mr. James.

I grew up a couple of doors down from Doug, we were best friends for life. Doug was in a violent motor-cycle crash, in 1977, which left him paralyzed from waist down and in a wheelchair until his death in 2018. Under the circumstances, he lived a happy and fulfilling life, and was quite the rock guitar player.
