Luann and her 10-year-old son Kelvin died on February 21, 2000 near Juneau, Alaska. Luann had lived there permanently since 1985 and was a true wilderness woman! She had a love for life and energy that was contagious. She was never afraid to hike in the mountains, sign on as a crew hand on a fishing boat, and bike anywhere her two wheels would take her. One summer she cycled all the way from Seattle to Los Angeles (about 1200 miles) alone. She got hit by a car during the first few days of her trip but got the bike fixed and continued her journey! After finishing college with an education degree she also got a business license so she could run her own school, Summit Elementary. Her students and mine were penpals for a year, and wow, was she an awesome teacher! She and her husband Todd were the parents of two boys, Kelvin and Adam. One day when Kelvin was 10 and Adam was just 1, Luann, her boys, and Kelvin's friend went for a walk along some spring-fed ponds. The ice along the edge of the pond let loose with the older boys on it, and they went into the cold water. Luann went in to help them and she and Kelvin did not survive. Over 500 people attended their funeral. Juneau is a small city and she and Kelvin were known and loved by many people.
Luann would write wonderful descriptive letters about her life in Alaska, and here is a quote from one of those:
"We have fresh snow on the mountains! The Northern lights danced in the sky last night. Tonight was a most beautiful red sunset reflecting off the mountains and onto the ocean. Someday, I hope to share this with you."
I never got the chance to share that view with Luann, but we'll share an even better view together forever when we meet again in heaven. It's the faith we share that makes our friendships all the more special.
