South Salem High School
Class of 1970
ANNOUNCEMENTS

To: All Members of the South Salem Class of 1970

We are very proud and very appreciative of the tremendous support our class has given to the Class of 1970 Scholarship fund! The collective contributions of our class members provided support for four $1,000 scholarships to South Salem graduates last year and we are on track to match that this year, too. We send a hearty thank you to everyone who has supported the effort to date - the deserving recipients have expressed their gratitude and they have put the funds to good use in their post- high school endeavors.

We have until April 30 to make contributions to the fund to count toward this year’s scholarship awards. So any of you who have intended to contribute - or now wish to contribute - can still make donations and have them count toward this year’s scholarship awards. Contributions should be made to the Saxon Success Fund (a 501c-3 non-profit) and designated to go into the Class of 1970 Scholarship Fund. Donations can be made by check or online. Donations made by check should be made payable to Saxon Success Fund and mailed to 1910 Church St. SE, Salem, Oregon 97302. Donations can also be made online through the Saxon Success Fund website at: saxonsuccessfund.org .

We thank again everyone who has contributed to date and we encourage all to consider joining in the effort at any level of support. Collectively we are making a difference!

To: All Member of the South Salem Class of 1970

As we noted in earlier communications we are extremely grateful and proud of how well our class has supported the Class of 1970 Scholarship effort! We provided four deserving South Salem graduates with $1000 scholarships this past year to use as they embark on their post-high school journeys. We hope we are be able to continue this same great effort going forward.

This year’s national Giving Tuesday date is November 28 and we want to remind you about how to donate to our Class of 1970 Scholarship Fund as that date approaches. Any and all members of our class can donate contributions to the Saxon Success Fund (a 501c-3 non-profit) and designate those funds to go into the Class of 1970 Scholarship Fund. Donations can be made by check or online. Donations made by check should be made payable to Saxon Success Fund and mailed to 1910 Church St. SE, Salem, OR 97302. Donations can also be made online through the Saxon Success Fund website at: saxonsuccessfund.org.

We thank each and every member of our class who has contributed to the Class of 1970 Scholarship Fund so far and we encourage everyone to consider making a donation now and on into the future – we could not have come as far as we have without every single person who has contributed to date.

We hope you had a great Thanksgiving and we hope that the upcoming holiday season is full of peace and joy for you and yours.

Saxon Success Fund Scholarship Program

The Saxon Success Fund (SSF) awards scholarships to graduating seniors at SSHS each year in the amount of $1000. The Fund’s dream and ultimate goal is to provide each college-bound senior a scholarship. Since beginning the scholarship program in the spring of 2020, SSF has provided 40 scholarships to deserving graduates.

In 2023, SSF granted scholarships to 11 South seniors. The Class of 1970 began supporting the SSF scholarship program during the 2022-23 school year, donating a total of $4491, which funded four scholarships. The SSF Board has been so appreciative that the Class of 1970 has helped increase the number of graduating seniors who have received awards.

Below are short biographies of the four SSF scholarship recipients funded by the Class of 1970.

Scholar 1 – Attending Willamette University and interested in political science and then pursuing a law degree. He plans to seek an internship in Washington, D.C. At South, Scholar 1 was an International Baccalaureate student and captain of the varsity tennis team, and active in National Honor Society and LINK leadership.

Scholar 2 – Attending OSU Honors College and interested in a pre-veterinary program and Agricultural Sciences major before pursuing a graduate and DVM licensing/degrees. Scholar 2 has done a lot of volunteer and paid work with small animals and livestock during high school, and played softball for South.

Scholar 3 – Attending Chemeketa Community College initially then transferring to OSU. Scholar 3 is interested in engineering and would like to work in the aerospace industry, so he plans to begin with a degree in mechanical engineering. He was active and a strong leader in the CTEC (Career Technical Education Center) Drones and Robotics program.

Scholar 4 – Attending University of Oregon and studying to become an athletic trainer and then continuing on to earn a degree in sports therapy. Scholar 4 has played soccer and participated in track and DECA during her time at South. She has worked at her community pool as a life guard and giving swim lessons to neighboring children.
