In Memory

Steven Ray Longbine

Steven Ray Longbine, 17, died August, 25, 1972 in Salina, Kansas of a heart condition known as cardiomyopathy. Steven died just days prior to the beginning of his senior year. His funeral was on August 28, 1972, which was the first day of his senior year.

While in 8th grade, Steven was diagnosed with an enlarged heart and he endured many doctor appointments and trips to KU Medical Center for treatment. Unfortunately, little was known about his heart condition at that time and treatment options were limited.

During elementary school at Grace E. Stewart and South Junior High School, Steve bowled in youth leagues. During his junior year, his activities were very limited. He had several stays in the hospital and missed a lot of school.

Steve had a passion for music. He was a talented, self-taught musician and played the guitar and drums by ear. Getting together with his friends and “jamming” was an activity that he enjoyed immensely.

Survivors include: his parents, Duane “Dee” and Mayetta Longbine, and two siblings, Deanna “Dee Dee” Longbine and Bill Longbine.

Interment is in the Roselawn Memorial Park, Salina, Kansas.
