TEEN-AGER SLAIN WITH BULLET
OUTSIDE STORE; 3 YOUTHS HELD
Salt Lake City - An 18-year-old Salt Lake County youth was dead on arrival at University Hospital here Thursday night, the victim of a .22 caliber bullet wound suffered in an altercation outside the Grand Central Store at 3271 East 33rd South.
Three juveniles who fled the scene after the shooting have been taken into custody by the Salt Lake Sheriff's Department. One, 16 years old, was booked on suspicion of first degree murder.
The vicitm was identified as Kenneth Wayne Anderton, son of Mr. and Mrs. Ralph A. Anderton of 451 East 33rd South. Hospital authorities said the youth had been shot once in the chest, apparently at close range.
Sheriff's Capt. N. D. Hayward said an employee and customer chased the three youths about four blocks when one of them, brandishing a gun, turned and threatened to shoot.
The unidentified youth finally tossed the pistol to the ground.
Sheriff's department officials said the shooting erupted during a fight outside the store, involving four to six juvenites.
