Head-On Collision Kills Two Women In W. Valley Road-Construction Area
Investigating officers say that gravel in area may be factor in crash

KELLY KENNEDY THE SALT LAKE TRIBUNE

West Valley investigators suspect road construction was a major factor in a head-on collision that ended in two deaths Monday morning. Melody Arlt, 31, of West Jordan was driving a Ford north on state Road 111 (8400 West) near 5000 South where the paved surfacing turned into gravel,

Sandquist said. She lost control of her vehicle, slid through the median into oncoming traffic, hit an Oldsmobile head-on, then spun off the road, West Valley police Lt. Lance Call said. As her vehicle was spinning, Arlt flew out the back window of her vehicle.

Arlt and the driver of the other vehicle, Mary Tourigny, 42, of Sandy, died instantly in the 6:15 a.m. accident. Neither woman was wearing a seat belt.

"We don't know if [Arlt] was going too fast to correct it, or if she overcorrected or if she just panicked," Sandquist said. "We don't think [Tourigny] even knew she was coming her way. There aren't any skid marks from her vehicle."

Granite Construction Co. workers spread a layer of black top on state Road 111, then covered it with gravel, Sandquist said. After the gravel is packed down, the workers will coat it again with a sealer. The posted speed limit in that area is normally 60 mph, but after construction began Sunday, it was lowered to 40 mph.

"Speed was a factor," West Valley police Lt. Steve Sandquist said. "But I can tell you there was a lot of gravel. Had she been doing 40 mph, I don't know if it would have mattered."

Sandquist said investigators inspected the construction site, as well as Arlt's speed and posted signs. They will use this information to help determine the cause of the accident.

Sandquist said he has never seen a gravel-related accident before, though he has seen cases of people driving into big holes caused by construction.

"Obviously, those signs are there for a reason," he said.
