Jim's dad and my Dad were friends. Jim and I have been friends since our teens. At Church dances, Jim was the boy who made sure every girl got a chance to dance. We were faculty members at the U together. We went to Lake Powell together. We served side by side on the same Board for many years. I am having a hard time processing Jim's death.

I echo Sam's last sentence. We were part of the 9th South gang. Condolences to Betty Jo and family.

I'm so saddened to learn of Jim's death. I first came to know him at HIllside Jr. High School, where I served on his election committee for class office in 1956, I believe. I made up a Charley Brown motif for his campaign and produced handmade posters to introduce him to the school. I believe he won, too. Then, at East High, we were friendly competitors on the track team, at least for the 100-yard dash—and he was extremely fast. He was dedicated, disciplined, and purposeful in track, and he beat me out for first place whenever we competed with other schools. I was lazy and did half the work he did in practice, but somehow I pulled up enough adreneline to edge him out at BYU and regionals. Together, on the 220 relay, we were downright unbeatable, and took gold in the State meet in 1960. At the 50th East High reunion in 2010, we talked about doing a repeat race—for maybe 20 yards, but regrettably I chickened out. I always admired his kindness, his intelligence, and his wit. I will miss him a great deal, and will think more on my experience with him.

So sorry to hear about Jim.  He is one I admired.  He was very smart, a good athlete, great personality and friendly to everyone. He was certainly a complete package.  I had the opportunity to work with Jim in a business he started while in high school.  Jim would pick up boxes of discarded IBM punch cards and recycle them.  I do not know how profitable the business was, but I always enjoyed spending time with Jim. Very best wishes to his family.

I always remember Jimmy Croft as my backyard neighbor when I lived on Hubbard Avenue in Salt Lake City Utah in the late 1940’s and early 1950’s. He was always so kind and fun to be around. I certainly enjoyed catching up with him at our High School Reunions. It’s very hard to imagine him missing the next reunion. Condolences to his wife and family. Billie Dawson Sherwood
