A conservation and mountaineering icon.  Sad loss.

My Life Walking in Rick’s Very Large Footprints – A Remembrance

As I look back on my 80 years on earth, Rick is one of those special people who made a significant difference in my life. He has been a lifelong friend, a mentor, someone I have tried to emulate. My love for the outdoors and my passion for hiking, backpacking, canyoneering, hunting, and fishing in large part can be attributed to Rick. My environmental ethic began by watching Rick take special care of the earth. My environmental activism has been a result of watching Rick get involved, stay involved and make a difference. From his work in creating the Bonneville Shoreline Trail to the conservation easement he placed on his Montana property and countless other projects, “giving back” and “making a difference” has always been his mantra and it became mine.

I can’t think about Rick without remembering his unique signatures. First, he was a beautiful deep power backcountry skier and on every outing he signed his name with his perfect signature turns. Second, whether it was in a mountain or a desert canyon, Rick’s signature yodel was both unique and hauntingly beautiful. There were copycats but no one could yodel like Rick. Third, Rick signed the beginning of every deep power backcountry run with an exuberant shout as his vocal signature of pure delight.

You can read Rick's obituary in the January 16th Salt Lake Tribune
