I'll never forget going to Highpoint Elementary School with David.  He was always making us laugh.   Lots of people over the years have made me smile, but David was a rare and special person who brought a joy to life.  Everyone liked him, and I have thought of him countless times over the years.  Even the teachers would laugh helplessly at his comments.

We frequently sat at the same lunch table, and I remember how we were both fond of the music theme from "The Longest Day."  Maybe some of you will remember that tune, famous for the section when the men whistle the song rather than sing it.  David and I used to hum it at the table quietly so that Ms. Varnedoe wouldn't hear.

David was in the same Boy Scout troup as I was for a while.  We both went on a campout in the winter at Pine Mountain, GA.  This was in the days long before common campers had warm sleeping bags, and the temperature went down to the single digits.  I was in an assigned tent group, but David was not.  The Scoutmaster built a lean-to shelter over a rope for David, but I felt so sorry for him out by himself that I dragged my stuff out to sleep essentialy in the open with him.  Needless to say, neither of us slept that night.

David, the world may be a little less bright on the surface, but your memory will always brighten my memories of growing up.  God bless you!

Your friend,

Gary Windham ("Windhamindhamindham" as you used to say!)

I sold a 61 V.W. to Dave. The first weekend he had it--took it to Lanier and rolled it in the lake. Had a wrecker tow it to his home --flushed everything- fresh gas and YES it Ran!! Can't you see his Huge Smile!

David was in my 7th grade class at High Point Elementary, and I recall how he would frequently get the class laughing.  There not much Mrs. Heitzman, our teacher could do about it, except to frequently repeat the words, "now laugh class, this is what David wants".  Academics were not one of David's priorities, as I recall, but he was an amazing artist.  His drawings and paintings were always the best.  There was a depth to David that his artwork displayed wonderfully.  David and I drifted apart after elementary school, but I now realize how we need more Davids around.

I accidentally learned of DBart's death while googling something else a while back. Great HS friend, sorry that he dropped so early.
