In Memory

Doug Biddle

Doug Biddle, father, brother, son, uncle, nephew, and cousin passed away on July 10, 2023 at the age of 73. His complex life and legacy will be remembered for his generosity, his bravery, and for his love of family and friends.

Doug was born on December 28, 1948 to Bob and Nancy Biddle while they attended University of California at Santa Barbara. He was the "first" child, grandchild, and great- grandchild to a family who thoroughly spoiled and completely adored him. He loved to spend time with his grandfather, father and friends to partake in his favorite pastimes; hunting and fishing in California as well as out of state.

Doug attended Santa Maria schools and graduated from Santa Maria High School with the Class of 1968. He played multiple sports growing up, and ended up playing football for the Santa Maria Saints where his father coached offense for the varsity football team. He was honored as Saint of the Week during his senior year for the Barstow game. It is well remembered by the family that Doug's dad (and Coach) showed no favoritism on the field; however, during one particular game, Doug caught a pass and went into the endzone for a touchdown; his father broke protocol and self restraint and ran up and grabbed him off the ground on the field in a bearhug full of joy and pride.

After high school graduation, Doug attended Cal Poly, San Luis Obispo for a few years until he decided he needed to "take a year off." That decision proved to be a life changing and pivotal choice as his draft number immediately came up and he was off to the Army in 1971 and into the Vietnam War, which proved to be (like all who served during this time) a life altering experience. Doug served on a helicopter crew who went into combat, under fire, to pick up their fallen and injured comrades. Doug was awarded the Bronze Star, the National Defense Service Medal, Republic Vietnam Campaign Medal, and the Good Conduct Medal as a result of his brave service and sacrifice.

After leaving the Army, Doug came home and worked at Engel and Gray for several years. Afterward, he went on to work both offshore and independently as a welder for many years until his retirement. He later married Laurie Dunklin in 1985 and had two beautiful daughters, Lauren and Lindsay.

Doug will be remembered for his hilarious sense of humor, tough exterior (and soft heart), talking out of the side of his mouth with funny asides, his lifelong ability to tease with relentlessness, and his deep rooted love of family and friends. He was generous to a fault, loved fiercely, took losses hard, and was truly a great man to the core. He was loyal, compassionate, and empathetic, but chose to hide these traits behind a rough exterior. He will be sorely missed by those who could see past this; we, his family, friends, and all who knew him throughout his life, are better for having had him in our lives.

Doug leaves behind two daughters, Lauren Biddle and Lindsay Biddle of Santa Maria, sisters, Debby Delaney of New Mexico, Dianne Foster of Arizona, and Dona Biddle-Hinchliff of Santa Maria, Aunt, Jeane Raine of Maui, HI, cousins Randy Colemen of Oregon, Danny Coleman of Maui, HI, and Carrie Williams of Maui, HI, and of course, Jackson, his dog; who was his constant companion and loyal best friend.

There will be no public services, so Doug's family requests for all who knew and loved him, please take every opportunity in your everyday lives to thank a Veteran, young or old, for their sacrifice and service to this country and for keeping us safe Every.Single.Day.
