In Memory

Lauren Souza

This information was sent to me by Marvon Hadsell.

Lauren Souza, 69, a longtime Marblehead resident, passed away peacefully, at her home in Marblehead.

Born in Sata Maria, California, Lauren was the beloved daughter of the late Wilbur and Marilyn (Herrick) Souza. She was the loving mother of Brendan Hughes of South Boston and  Alanna Hughes (husband Andrew Smith) of East Boston. She was the dear sister of Carol Ciavarelli and her husband, Anthony of Lake Oswego, Oregon.....the cherished aunt of Gina and Greg Chandler of Lake Oswego, Oregon..... and the great aunt of Katie and TJ Carver or Spokane, Washington, and Jennifer Chandler of Waco, Texas.  Lauren is also survived by many close friends.

She was a graduate of Santa Maria High School's Class of 1968 and earned her Bachelor's Degree from the University of California, Los Angeles (UCLA) and her Master's Degree from Boston University.  She worked as a flight attendant for Delta Airlines for over 35 years.

Lauren treasured time with family and "the girls" as her friends were known, especially traveling the world, hosting parties for the holidays and walking in the outdoors.  She especially, enjoyed horseback riding, traveling to Europe and National Parks and when her parents were still alive, family trips to Lake Tahoe, California, where some of her children's fondest memories were made.

Lauren will be remembered as a kind and thoughtful woman, often sending messages and gifts to family and friends. She will be remembered as someone who dearly loved animals, someone who focused on health and well-being and had an eye for beauty and design.  Lauren will also be remembered as a friendly, fun and inclusive person befriending others easily.  She was well-read and passionaate about expressing her opinions, causing others to think.  She will sincerely, be missed by all who knew her.

Sevices will be private.  Arrangements are under the care of Eustin & Cornell of Marblehead.  In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to the MSPCA-Angel Fund via www.mspca.org/donate  or to Forward Stride via https:/forwardstride.org/donate.  To share a memory or leave online condolences, please visit www.eustisandcornellfuneralhome.com.

Lauren lived in Marblehead, Massachuetts, north of Boston.  I chatted with her several times over the years @ reunion time.  Thus is was in the Spring of 2018 that I last called Lauren.  We had a wonderful chat, catching up on the last 5 or 6 years (about her children, her parents, Oregon and her new place in Marblehead).  She told me she would not be able to join us for our 50th, she was fighting her battle with cancer.  There were no speciifics, no poor me, just positive cheery Lauren.  She wishes she could join us, and expressed her greetings to her fellow Saints.  I see Lauren's smile and hear her cheery voice as I write this.

I remember Lauren as a wonderful person who shared my birthdate.  She had a personality that stood out as a kind and friendly person.  She was so very pretty and exemplified a wonderful Piscean nature.  I wish her family peace and comfort in knowing they had one of the best in this world for their loved one.  Rest in peace Dear Classmate. heart

Lauren was the prettiest girl at Santa Maria High, and just the sweetest too.

~Who among us would not remember the beauty that was Lauren Souza? Her confidence and loyalty led each cheer she performed ...each hair neatly tucked into that signature flip, with classic good looks and poise befitting the airline attendant I just read that was to be her career. She stood out in a crowd and the crowd was lucky enough to be our class of '68.

God rest your lovely soul, Lauren.  I did not know you personally, but am confident that God has a special place for you in his host of angels.  Saints Rule!!~~~and so did you!!

So very sorry to hear about Lauren.  I went to school with her from the 1st grade through 8th grade at St. Mary's in Santa Maria.  And then again when I transferred from St. Joseph's HS to SMHS for my junior and senior years.  She was strikingly pretty even in grade school and she matched that with a great intellect.   Although we never hung out together, we also shared a number of classes together in HS. She was always kind and amiable to all.  I was hoping to perhaps see her at our 50th renunion, but had no idea that she was fighting cancer.  It was a shock to receive the notice from our Class of 1968. So very sorry to see her added to our growing list of "in memory" classmates.

With sympathy, love, and prayers to her family,
Dan Gracia

Lauren Souza was an icon in the class of '68. It's not always easy to be iconic, but Lauren did it with such grace, warmth, and beauty that we all loved her. She was unfailingly friendly to all, always kind and unassuming. She carried herself with poise and humility. We shared many classes, and her intelligence always shone. I am sad that she is gone and that she suffered. I wish her family and friends peace and comfort.

I wasn't part of Lauren's circle of friends; however, she was so beautiful and friendly to us all.  I am indeed saddened by her loss and I only want to wish her love ones and family my deepest condolences and sympathy and prayers.
