Prayers For Janice Nafziger Lynn
Posted Wednesday, February 29, 2012 09:23 AM

Seaside High School, Seaside Oregon
Class Of 1972

I have just received terrible news from Janice Nafziger Lynn's younger Brother Eric. He has asked that I pass this information along to her friends.

Janice and her mother were walking home from dinner in the neighborhood where they lived last Saturday Evening and were both struck by a car as they were crossing a residential street at 8 PM. It was apparently an accident with no alcohol involved and no charges are expected against the driver.

Both were taken to the hospital and Janices mother died Tuesday evening of her injuries.

Janice is in critical condition in ICU with a shattered pelvis, two broken bones in her leg and head injuries. She is in a coma due to the brain injuries. They have drained blood from her skull to remove pressure and have her heavily medicated to allow her to recover. Blood clots are a real danger, and have placed filters in her blood stream to catch them.

She is in the ICU at Broward General Medical Center. She can not receive calls or flowers. Her brother Eric and sister Amy are there with her.

She can hear our prayers.

I pray for her recovery, send my love, and mourn her and her families loss.

Lets send as much positive love, feelings and prayer to our sister in her time of need as we can.

May the Lord bless her and give her the strength to return to us as the vibrant and beautiful woman we knew.

We love you Janice and pray for your speedy and full recovery. Roger Cole

So sad. I agree with Roger ... let's pray for Janice's strength and a full and speedy recovery.

Found an article which gives a little more detail:

Update on Janice: I spoke with her brother Eric this morning and there is good news! Janice opened her eyes this morning and nodded in response to a question. She is scheduled for surgery today at noon to insert a plate and some pins into her pelvis. These would stay in for 4 or 5 months and then be removed. They are also going to repair the broken bones in her leg and ankle. The Doctor told Eric that if all goes well she may come home in a wheelchair in a couple of weeks. She is still in ICU and will remain there for the time being. Our prayers are helping. She is not out of the woods. Please keep them coming. Eric thanked everyone and was hopeful that Janice, Amey and himself would see us at the reunion.

Update from 30 minutes ago. Eric just called back and Janice is continuing to improve. She went through a 6 hr. surgery yesterday. They put three screws into her pelvis, (no plates were needed), and also some screws and a plate into the area below her knee. Also a plate and screws were inserted into her arm. There is another break in her leg that they think will heal on its own. All of this is permanent so will not require another surgery to remove.

She is still sedated in ICU and he expects she will remain for another week there. Still no flowers or cards can be sent.

He says she is looking better and has some color returning to her eyes.

Her prognosis has improved each day, she has had no complications and appears to be fighting to get better.

This is about as good of news as we could possible have hoped for. She is feeling the love, lets keep it going.

Here are some pictures Tom Horning sent along and asked me to post.

Talked to Eric around 4 PM. Janice had a quiet day recovering from surgery. They are keeping her sedated so she was resting all day. They are trying to wean her from the breathing apparatus as it is an aggravation to her mouth and throat, but as yet cannot for long. Still all positive news, no complications, she is fighting hard and winning the battle so far. Still a long way to go.

They had a small private service for her mother last night. She was cremated. Eric said his father sent a wonderful letter which was read at her service. (They have been divorced for 35 years?). He is alive and well living in Boise I  believe. (80 years old).

Whatever powers are at work here are working. Lets keep it up.

Janices update.

This is post that her brother Erics wife posted on Sunday.

We met with the the doctors and nurses today regarding Janice Lynne's condition. She will be on a respirator for a while longer, and even though she opens her eyes periodically, she is not expected to communicate verbally for a few more weeks. She has a very long recovery period, and the doctors and nurses have been receiving numerous calls from Janice's friends asking for updates. As we receive information on Janice's prognosis, we will continue to post on her Facebook page. Please do not call the hospital, or stop by for a visit until we notify you when she is in better condition to receive visitors. This is a very critical time for Janice Lynne. We very much appreciate your support, but at this time only family members will be allowed visitation. Thank your for your concern, and we will keep you posted. Sincerely, Eric and Patricia Nafziger, and Amy Nafziger.

I spoke with Eric this afternoon, (Monday), he said that Janice is fighting hard, but it is a slow process and there have been some bumps in the road. She was unable to breath without assistance and they are looking at doing a tracheotomy on Wednesday and inserting the breathing device into her throat. (I have seen this in the past with others who were comotose for extended periods.) She has developed a mild case of pneumonia and are treating it with anti-biotics. She wakes briefly and is still respoding to nurse requests to move her toes and stick out her tongue.

Her sister Amy is leaving on Thursday, Eric will stay ,

It seems as though this will be a test of her determination. She has a very long way to go. . She needs all of the positive thoughts we can muster. Lets renew the prayers, she needs all that we can send,

Update Janice Nafziger Lynn

Eric reported that Janice is having good and bad days. They have removed the respirator and she is breathing on her own fine. She was moved out of ICU yesterday and put into the trauma center. She is being fed with an I.V., but as of Tuesday morning she is no longer being sedated.

The disappointing news is she has not woken up yet. She opens her eyes for moments but has not responded well to commands.

Due to this she went back in for a CAT scan of her brain today and they are awaiting the results. Recall that she had some bleeding in her brain which they immediately went after initially. They are scanning to see if the bleeding has returned or what else they may find.

She is moving her arms, the pneumonia appears to be controlled. She appears to be at rest.

Eric says still no flowers or cards.

Let’s redouble our efforts here.

Janice our sister please wake up. . There is light ahead of this dark if you can find your way..   Have the strength to overcome these injuries.

Whatever love or prayers we can send are needed now.

Here is the news we have been waiting to hear.

Janice says, “Hello to all of my friend’s, and I will see you in September!” I just spoke with her on the phone, she is alert and converses. She is still in the wheelchair for now waiting for her bones to heal, and is still in the nursing home for now.

Next Wednesday she sees the orthopedist and hopefully he will release her to the rehab facility. Eric says he hopes to take her home for a visit after the doctor’s appointment, just for the day.

Eric’s wife is flying in today and will stay for a week or more, so things are looking up for him. It was so exciting to hear her voice, while it is a bit raspy she sounded good, her spirits were high and she was excited talking about September in Seaside for the class reunion.

She has made great progress the past week, and thanks everyone for all of the prayers and love that were sent.

We made a difference for Janice. Let’s keep it up. She has many more hills to climb, but there is an end now in sight.

Roger Cole

Great News! We look foward to seeing Janice in Sept.!

I spoke with Janice on the phone again today. She has been at home now since early April. She is doing physical rehab three times a week working mainly on her walking. She is able to take care of herself and does get around on her own although it is painful to walk. She is not allowed to drive and has friends come by to assist her as she needs. Her memory is coming back and there is a way to go before she is fully recovered from her head injury.

She is thinking she will not be strong enough by September to come to the reunion, but does have some hope. Her father who is 90 years old has kidney issues and Eric her brother has returned to Washington to assist him. Janice would like to come and visit him and come to the reunion if she is able, but she did not sound positive about it.

Going back to work will be as she says, maybe but a long time off.

Her spirits were good, her voice is still raspy, and she is thankful to be alive. She misses her mother terribly. She has a long and painful road ahead. Lets keep her in our prayers and thoughts, and hope that we see her in September.

My Dear Janice,

Sending you much love, and a speedy recovery, with as little pain as possible.

I really hope to see you in September in Seaside if you feel up to it!

It was such a joy to see you at our last reunion! (I still have - and wear - the Carnival Cruises tee-shirt)

Much Love Always,

Buddy G Hendrickson (aka Bill Hendrickson)

Hi Janice,

I am so glad to hear that you are making a meraculous recovery.  You had us all very worried for a long time!!  I am so sorry about your Mom.  I know what it's like to lose a Mom, as mine passed a few years ago, but not as tragically as yours.  I know you're hurting physically and mentally but time will heal all.  If at all possible we would all love to see you at the reunion, but we will understand if you can't make it.  You should know that I have a tear in my eye as I am writing this.

Sending love your way.......

Chuck Methven

Hi Janice,

I am so sorry for your loss. I have been following your story for months as our class president Roger Cole is still hard at work keeping the class of 1972 informed. He is awesome! I hope that you are able to come to Seaside in September. I was not able to get to our 35th until Sunday Brunch and many of our classmates had left town by then. I am planning to be there this time, I am living in Southern Califrornia just a couple hours from Chuck Methven.

Keep fighting the good fight and know that many of us are thinking of you. Please let me know if there is anything I might do to help you or your family. I have been a photographer for 20 years and would be happy to do some photo work.

I spoke with Janice yesterday and she is doing much better. She has finished her rehab work and is up and walking. She was cleaning her mothers home out and getting ready to sell it and her brother Eric was there. She sounded much better and her spirits were good. She is still having some memory issues but her voice was clear and her thoughts were concise. She was talking about trying to come to the reunion and it sounded encouraging. She might fly into Portland and need a ride to Seaside and I assurred her that if she would come to Portland we would get her to Seaside one way or another.

Things are looking up all around. Reunion is nearing and optimism is growing.
