Harry was born in Seneca, SC, in the Shiloh Community, and was the son of the late Dana Elbert Hamilton and Ola Lee Palmer Hamilton. He lived a productive and impactful life filled with tremendous love and laughter in Seneca. Harry was a star, south paw quarterback and pitcher for the Seneca Bobcats and the Presbyterian College Blue Hose. In honor of his athletic achievements, he was inducted into the Seneca Senior High School Athletic Hall of Fame and Presbyterian College created the Harry R. Hamilton Scholarship to benefit athletes from Oconee County who attend Presbyterian College.

Harry was a longtime member of Trinity Baptist Church where he served as the Men’s Sunday School Class teacher and as Deacon. He proudly served as a member of the Seneca Rotary Club for over thirty years. His professional career was quite a joy for him as he served as a math teacher, coach, principal of Northside Elementary, and principal at his beloved Alma Mater, Seneca Senior High School, for twenty-eight years. Harry also dutifully served his country by committing thirty-five years to the Army Reserves, where he earned the rank of Lieutenant Colonel. In retirement, Harry enjoyed supervising student teachers at Clemson University, and he truly loved his time serving on the Oconee County Council. That councilman service included time spent as Interim County Supervisor for Oconee County. As a result of his dedicated service and devotion to Oconee County, Harry was awarded the Order of the Palmetto by the Governor. His favorite pastimes during retirement years were traveling and visiting with his family, and especially attending any and all events featuring his four adored grandchildren, whom they affectionately called “Papa Harry.” Daddy loved all of these things dearly, but it was the company of his soulmate and love of his life, Angela, that brought him the greatest joy.

Surviving are his daughters, Felicia Hamilton LeRoy (Al) of Seneca, SC; Letitia Hamilton Verdin (Chuck) of Greenville, SC; and Blythe Blackston Hamilton of Washington, DC; grandchildren, Anne-Hamilton LeRoy, Zachary Charles Verdin, Elias Smith Verdin, and Madelyn Letitia LeRoy; a brother, Fred Palmer Hamilton (Beatrice) of Seneca, SC; and two brothers-in-law, Dr. Ronald Dwain Blackston of Atlanta, GA and Ewing Devoe Blackston of Seneca, SC.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife of fifty-eight years, Angela Blackston Hamilton; his sister, Francis Huckabee Rascoe of Murfreesboro, TN; brothers, Elbert “Hines” Hamilton of Aiken, SC, and Dana Ray Hamilton (Jackie) of Winston-Salem, NC.
