Dear Classmates,

This last week was the 51st anniversary of "The Day that the Music Died". I can remember like it just happened yesterday...right before first period band, by the band room was the moment that I heard the news that Buddy Holly, Richie Valens, and the Big Bopper had died in a plane crash. At that moment, I thought "how could I go on without the music of Buddy "hiccups" Holly, Richie, "La Bamba" Valens and the Great Big "Hello Baby" Bopper. How time flies, when I hear their music I go back to first period Band. These High School memories will never let go. Thanks for the memories, see you at the big 50!

Henry, Do you remember what Eddie Lane's cause of death was?
I remember that day the music died too!

Sometimes I wonder about all those ag chems around us at the time.
I use to flag for those planes as a kid and was covered in that stuff.
I helped mix too and didn't even wear gloves, much less a mask.
In your body shop you probably have a lot of them too!

Hello Mike,

I ran into Eddie Lane's obituary when I was surfing the net looking for classmates. As you can see, there was no cause of death given. In the auto body industry the painter wears a spray suit, protective gloves and charcoal filtered respirator. Things are more complicated now a days, we have to track the VOC's. We have gone to water based paints. We have to deal with the Fire Department, Air Pollution Control, OSHA, the City and County. Wish things were more simple.

Back to Eddie Lane. I remember he could hit a softball the hardest of anybody in our class. May he rest in peace.

It's so good to hear you guys reminise about the good ole days, and that you keep in touch.  I have neglected to put in my two cents for quite a while but hope to keep in touch regularly. I am still on the Richland School Board and new elections will be in 2016.  Also, I am in my 24th year as Chairperson of the Cinco de Mayo event.  We get about 5 to 7 thousand people to the parade and the festival that follows at Mannel park.  If any of you are around on Saturday prior to May 5th come over and see the parade and sample the great foods at the park along with entertainment.  I remember Eddie Lane riding his motorcycle in our parades. One particular year we could not get a colorguard or honor guard to carry the Flag, and Eddie and his friends rode their bikes displaying the flag along with the national anthem playing on speaker. It was great.  I always think of that when I think of Eddie; he was one of my favorite people.

I really need to update my profile since things have changed a bit. Love to all, be healthy and safe.

Does anyone know if the Clarence Evans who died recently in Shafter was one of "us"?  The dates seems right, but the picture just so so!  Then again my picture looks like a 72 year old man..oh wait, I am a 72 year old man! Never mind!

Just wondering if it was the Clarence Evans I remember, sort of.

Yes, Neal, that was our Clarence Evans.  Suzie (Fuller) Dobbs and I attended his memorial service.  It was very nice, and there were several other SHS grads there, mostly from the class above us.  His family had lots of good things to say about him, and he will be missed.

Ronnie McCaslin was a friend of mine and died in Redding on Feb 25, 2015. After twelve years of schooling together we were in the Army together and travelled by train to the East Coast for "after-basic" training together in 1960. Never saw him again until 1965 in Shafter. After that, the next time was in the 80's when I worked in Redding (CHP). In 1965 his dad/mom Lewis (Dude) and Viola (Vi) had bought a Redding "Dari-Delite" and moved from Shafter to Redding. Later he re-named the drive-inn "Dude's" after his nick-name. Ronnie joined his father and bought the store in 1977 after his mother's health became bad. Dude's Drive Inn became a Redding icon, very famous for cruisers and High Schoolers for lunch, being close by Enterprise HS. I would stop in on occasion for a Dude Burger and shoot the breeze with Ronnie. Ronnie ran the store until his death. Dude's is being assumed by his daughter Roxanne, the third generation of McCaslin family. She just had the 50th Anniversary celebration on the same day in August that Grand-Father Dude took over ownership in 1965. If you're ever in Redding, stop by for a Dude burger and shake. Give Ronnie a thought as you enjoy!....This is one quick life we're in, so slow down a little and enjoy the whatever!  I swear, HS was like 3 weeks and my 35+ yrs as a CHP was like 10.
