AN UPDATE FROM ELLEN ASCHERMAN ROTH ON HER BOOK/MOVIE PROJECT

So excited to share that a team of animators in Hollywood is working on creating a teaser/trailer (2-3 minutes) for the screenplay adaption of my book, Ten Fingers Touching, a fantasy love story. The purpose of the trailer is to attract financiers, and/or a production company, and to inform potential distribution partners. I’m so grateful to these creative individuals who loved the magical features in the book and were inspired by the script that intertwines romance, mystery and adventure!

Congratulations Classmate Joyce Wilkerson for this lovely tribute.....  Thanks Eve Biskind Klothen and Roger Dennis for sending the article.

Philly school board member Joyce Wilkerson dreaded the idea of her portrait. Turns out she loves the abstract work.

Joyce Wilkerson is neither a “look at me” person, nor a “give me my due” person.

So when school board president Reginald Streater told her he was commissioning a portrait of Wilkerson — a current school board member, former board president and chair of the School Reform Commission — she wasn’t that thrilled. What about the other board members? What about the staff who supported them?

"It's lovely I'm being honored blah, blah, blah, said Wilkerson.  Apparantly its the tradition but it undervalues the role that everybody has to play if we’re really going to serve our children.”

Unveiled Wednesday, Wilkerson’s portrait is striking, colorful, and markedly different from the ones that preceded it. In the hallway outside the second-floor auditorium at Philadelphia School District headquarters, it hangs among rows of traditionally presented leaders: generally men, mostly wearing suits, mostly oil paintings.

“Joyful Determination,” the Wilkerson portrait by Philadelphia artist Sydney Carter, is a mixed-media work: acrylic paint, spray paint, paint crayons and gesso. Streater made Wilkerson responsible for finding the artist, and she wanted a public school graduate. Carter is an alumna of Central High; she has worked in Philadelphia schools as a teaching artist with the Mural Arts Program, and as a classroom counselor in a behavioral school that serves district children.

When Wilkerson settled on Carter, the two met for lunch. Carter wanted to know more about Wilkerson, who talked not so much about her impressive resume — degrees from the University of Pennsylvania and the University of California-Berkeley’s law school, chief of staff to Mayor John Street, executive director of New Orleans Redevelopment Authority — but about her family, her parents and sisters.

That's how Carter approaches her art.

“The background tells the story,” she said. As is with her portrait, you’ll also see layers — colors, texture, patterns. Wilkerson sent Carter photos of her parents and her sisters. There are sketches of children in the layers, and a picture of the school board, some images still evident in the final product.

Across Wilkerson’s face are images of the President’s House, the Philadelphia landmark that examines the intersection of freedom and slavery at the site of the country’s first executive mansion. During her years working for Street, Wilkerson pushed for the city to allocate funds to the project, because she believed the public ought to know the uncomfortable truths about America’s founding.

“I’m really proud of that in my career,” said Wilkerson, 73, who also steered the school system through the transition back to local control.

Wilkerson didn’t want to sit for a portrait — she asked Carter, whose sister is board member Sarah-Ashley Andrews, to base her work on a photograph. And the finished product? Wilkerson, hand on chin, looks out, pensively.

“You can tell that she’s serious, but not standoffish.,” Carter said. “You want to come and talk to her.”

Despite her initial lack of enthusiasm about the project, Wilkerson loves the portrait, for which Carter was paid $2,200, money donated by the Fund for the School District of Philadelphia.

“She managed to capture who I think I am, and my values,” Wilkerson said. “I used it as my ID on my phone; it looks like me to me.”

To Streater, the portrait was a necessity. (Not every SRC chair or board president has one.)

“Whether people agree or not with the way Joyce has done things, one thing is undeniable: her laser focus on students,” said Streater. “I think that we have to give people their flowers. We don’t know what young lady, what Black girl, will see this portrait and follow her example.”

For the record, Wilkerson said she loves “stepping back and mentoring. Reggie asks me my opinion, or he doesn’t, and I’m supportive and mumbling under my breath all the way.”

How long she will continue to do that is unclear.

Technically, the terms of each of the nine school board members ended when Cherelle L. Parker became mayor Jan. 2, but they will all continue to serve until Parker chooses new board members — or asks them to stay.

Parker has not yet indicated whom she’ll choose. Wilkerson, who said she would serve if asked, expects to remain active in education either way — she’s also a member of the executive committee of the Council of Great City Schools, an organization that represents the largest school systems in the country.

“I’m in it,” Wilkerson said, “because we’ve got a lot of work to do to educate our children appropriately.”

This past year I was fortunate enough to be asked to assist with the remodel project at MAR. I was able to use my photographs to enhance the experience of meeting at or visiting MAR. The conference room has 10+ large aluminum prints of Marin nature images as well as additional prints in the reception area. As many Realtors have commented, “it totally transformed the feeling in the conference room and MAR.”

For the last 30 years I have strived to help Realtors to market themselves with my cost-effective Marin Visions calendar with nature images of Marin. Many Marin Realtors have been utilizing my calendar for self-promotion for over 25 years.

After over three decades of capturing the beauty of our county, I created the Marin Visions book (above), which makes an economical closing gift that your client will enjoy for years to come. Every time they open it or show it to their friends, you will be the person thought of or mentioned to their friends, when they are asked where they got the book. The Marin Visions book is a hard cover, 208 page, 9”x12” coffee table book. To view a sample and see the pricing, please visit https://www.MarinVisionsBook.com Multiple book discounts are available.

Thank you for taking the time to read this and have a healthy and prosperous 2024!

TENTATIVE SCHEDULE

On Feb. 2nd, some of us will be reuniting for our annual mini-Shakerite  reunion in Palm Springs. On Friday night, the 2nd of Feb., we’ll be getting together at David Weinstein’s house at 39740 Kensington in  Rancho Mirage Ca 92270. Please come at 5 pm and please remember to bring some cash to reimburse David for dinner. On Saturday morning the 3rd of February, let's meet at Koffi’s at 71-380 Highway 111 Rancho Mirage at 10 AM for coffee and breakfast and to decide what we’ll do during the afternoon. Some (like me) will choose to do a nature hike, some will choose to go horseback riding, some will choose to shop around in town and some will ?????

heyho fellow Shakerites, the plans for Saturday dinner has changed, we will now be meeting at Alice B. restaurant located at 1122 E Tahquitz Canyon Way, Palm Springs, CA 92262. Well meet there at 5:30 for cocktails and gossip and 6:30 for dinner and gossip.

in Red Raider anticipation of our get together, bobby kirschenbaum

Sunday morning, Feb 4th,  is still up in the air. If we can convince Brad Friedlander (like we did last year) to prepare brunch, we’ll again meet at David Weinstein’s house at 10 AM  to get together before heading home. Again please have some cash available. If that option doesn’t work, we’ll meet at a coffee shop. I’m sooooooo looking forward to our get together my Shaker friends. Please, once again, confirm to me via email if you’ll be attending as David Weinstein and Brad Friedlander will need to know how many to prepare for and I’ll need to know how many to make the reservation for at Las Casuelas on Saturday night. I’m soooooo looking forward to our get together. Happy new year and all the best from your fellow Red Raider, bobby kirschenbaum

Can a group of well-intentioned people fulfill the promise of racial integration in America?

In this searing and intimate examination of the ideals and realities of racial integration, award-winning Washington Post journalist Laura Meckler tells the story of a decades-long pursuit in Shaker Heights, Ohio, and uncovers the roadblocks that have threatened progress time and again—in housing, in education, and in the promise of shared community.

In the late 1950s, Shaker Heights began groundbreaking work that would make it a national model for housing integration. And beginning in the seventies, it was known as a crown jewel in the national move to racially integrate schools. The school district built a reputation for academic excellence and diversity, serving as a model for how white and Black Americans can thrive together. Meckler—herself a product of Shaker Heights—takes a deeper look into the place that shaped her, investigating its complicated history and its ongoing challenges in order to untangle myth from truth. She confronts an enduring, and troubling, question—if Shaker Heights has worked so hard at racial equity, why does a racial academic achievement gap persist?

In telling the stories of the Shakerites who have built and lived in this community, Meckler asks: What will it take to fulfill the promise of racial integration in America? What compromises are people of all races willing to make? What does success look like, and has Shaker achieved it? The result is a complex and masterfully reported portrait of a place that, while never perfect, has achieved more than most and a road map for communities that seek to do the same.

Bringing back an old friend: Restaurateur Brad Friedlander to open Lopez in Chagrin Falls

CHAGRIN FALLS, Ohio – Restaurateur Brad Friedlander is getting back into the game.

He is reviving Lopez, his old Mexican restaurant, this time at 506 E. Washington St. in Chagrin Falls. The address had been home to several restaurants in the recent past and is next to a Burntwood Tavern.

Friedlander told cleveland.com he just took possession of the restaurant Thursday and hopes to open in mid-November. He said he has replaced kitchen equipment and the chefs are starting to cook today – Friday, Oct. 27.

Friedlander had wanted to open a Mexican place after returning to Cleveland in the 1970s from California to work with his father, also in the restaurant business. There were ones here and there, and a couple of little places on the West Side, he said, but that was about it.

Then – in a right-place, right-time situation - noted chef Rick Bayless had come into town to do some cooking classes, and Friedlander seized what he called the “fortuitous” moment.

“We knew back then what he was. He was the Van Gogh of Mexican food,” he said. “The things he did, the things that he taught, the way he behaved set the tenor in my kitchens for the last 50 years - the cleanliness, the quality, the freshness.”

Friedlander had opened what was Lopez y Gonzalez in 1980. Its original location was at 2066 Lee Road in Cleveland Heights. It closed in 1998. Even with Friedlander’s experience, Bayless’ name and a focus on upscale Mexican – this was not a place to just grab a few tacos – there was a learning curve among diners.

When the restaurant opened, “People didn’t understand it. They were coming in looking for chimichangas. They were looking for things we weren’t doing. They didn’t understand jalapeno mustard sauce, fish dishes, the chicken. We loved the food and it was phenomenal, but the public didn’t take to it right away.

“The people who understood what we were doing appreciated it; the people who didn’t condemned us.”

Then a glowing review ran in The Plain Dealer, and the restaurant took off.

Now it’s Lopez 2.0.

“It’s going to be like Lopez y Gonzalez, but just the Lopez part,” he joked.

Armed with Bayless’ recipes, the restaurant will accommodate about 50 seats with 25 to 30 on the patio.

“It’s going to be a small restaurant, because I know what it’s like to have a big restaurant these days,” he said.

“One of the fearful things about doing something like this is everyone is going to say, ‘It’s not the same.’ That’s a big thing.”

Friedlander said he contacted many of the original employees to test the food in a beta-like, trial-and-error stage.

“It’s so different from any Mexican restaurant in Cleveland,” he said. “It’s not taco-based. We do Mexican entrees.”

heyho fellow Shakerites, I finally got together today with Sue West, Dennis Mesnick’s wife. We’ve been trying for a while since Dennis’s passing. But we met today in Encinitas and had a delicious lunch at an Indian restaurant. It was sooooooo special to get together with her and see that she’s doing very well. Of course, it hasn’t been an easy time with losing Dennis, but she’s been keeping busy visiting family and friends and doing some traveling. I’m sooooo grateful that we were able to get together. xoxoxo, your fellow red raider, bobby

I taped a segment of let’s make a deal in January and they said they were going to play it in May but then they’ve already aired it twice and now they put it on Paramount plus. If you don’t have it, you can do the trial. And then quit at no cost. You’ll get a kick out of seeing this I promise. Please feel free to share this as I just can’t contact everybody who would want to see it. Again, they already played it on TV and now it is only available on Paramount plus where they are ordered by air date. Enjoy. See me on Let’s Make a Deal Paramount+ Season 14. Airdate. 4/4/2033

A note from Marc Morgenstern:  My wife Amy and I are on a beach in Mexico with Danny Wolpaw and his wife Terry.
Just finished an extraordinarily good book: “Rock Me on the Water”-1974, The Year Los Angeles transformed Movies, Music, Television, and Politics.
Why does the Class of 1968 care? Aside from its inherent merits as a social and cultural history of America, the author interviewed and quoted not one, but TWO,  of our classmates:

Ellen (Bernstein) Ziffren and Dale Pollock!!
Also, it’s very much a story of our times and lives seen through a different, insightful telescope. Jackson Browne, Linda Ronstadt, Joni Mitchell, Jerry Browne, Norman Lear, Mary Tyler Moore, Warren Beatty, and Jack Nicholson all receive lots of ink and love.

BACKGROUND:

As a New York State Licensed Psychologist, I have been practicing, teaching and supervising in many areas of psychology for over 25 years. I earned my doctorate in Psychology from Boston University. I am extensively trained in Behavior Therapy (BT), Cognitive-Behavior Therapy (CBT) and Dialectical Behavior Therapy (DBT). In addition I am a Certified School Psychologist with 20 years experience in school districts working with children with ASD, emotional dysregulation, ADHD and learning disabilities.

In my therapy practice I focus on reducing your current distress and taking steps to identify and moderate your problems (whether simple or multi-layered) using effective, therapeutic methods.  We will establish a relationship where you can discuss your concerns openly in a non-judgemental and compassionate environment.  Together we will identify important issues, select realistic goals and build on your existing positive skills/gifts/life circumstances.  I will provide education, feedback and an objective perspective to help you work towards a lasting therapeutic outcome.

Last year I commuted weekly from Cleveland to teach “Street Smart Startups” at UC Berkeley. Course was loosely based on my new book (The Soul of the Deal-creative frameworks for buying, selling, and investing in any business).           Thesis? I learned how to do decades of M&A and venture capital deals by selling encyclopedias door to door and following the Grateful Dead. Reviews have been very kind and keep mentioning how funny it is. Right now I’m doing a lot of podcasts and media interviews to support sales.

Selling books is HARD work!!!! ðŸ“š

It’s a brisk Tuesday morning in South Bend and the main case on the morning docket at Pacific County North District Court is a charge against four defendants for selling shellfish without a label. A few moments before, the state opted to drop charges on another case described as an assault “involving raw eggs.” Throughout the morning there are a few other cases to tie up, like a name change, quashing warrants, and possible probation violations.

The Pacific County Courthouse sits atop a hill that offers wide views of the Willapa River, which bleeds into Willapa Bay and then out into the Pacific Ocean, where it crashes against the shores of Long Beach, Klipsan, and other parts of south county that folks in South Bend simply refer to as “the beach.”

Willapa is oyster country. Down the hill from the courthouse is the Chester Tavern, an unassuming dive bar that The New York Times said “may [have] the best fried oysters in the country.”1 A little farther up Highway 101, which serves as the main thoroughfare through downtown South Bend, is an oyster half-shell, speckled with greenish yellow moss, that measures about the size of a car hood and is the self-proclaimed “world’s largest oyster.” It’s the type of roadside attraction that gets away with such bold claims despite being, in actuality, a cement sculpture in disrepair.

Back in court, as if to prove that this is indeed a small community courtroom, one person explains that the court is mistaken in thinking he hadn’t reported enough community service hours—and he can easily prove it because the person he reports to shares a last name with the judge overseeing his case this morning: Betsy Penoyar.

You could argue that in South Bend, indeed across north Pacific County, the Penoyar family is the legal profession. If you go looking for an active member of the Bar in private practice in Pacific County, you have a 40 percent chance of ending up with Betsy or another member of the Penoyar family.

MARC MORGENSTERN'S

book (The Soul of the Deal: Creative Frameworks for Buying, Selling, and Investing in any Business) is now available for pre-order on Amazon!! (Official launch date is November 1). "Fundamental premise is that I learned how  do mergers and acquisitions, as well as venture investments, by selling encyclopedias door to door during summer vacation and following the Grateful Dead for a lifetime.

It’s defiantly non-academic. All genuine stories, actual negotiation dialogue, and Key Takeaways. Not to mention dozens of Morgenstern’s Maxims. My goal was to let people laugh while they learn."

Yesterday the Museum’s Ohio supporters gathered, both in person and virtually, to reaffirm their support for our mission and help teach the timeless and timely lessons of Holocaust history to a world that desperately needs them. We thank our supporters and leadership, without whom this event would not have been possible.

If you were not able to join us live, the event is now available on demand, and we invite you to share it with your friends and family.

Wonderful day--left Lima, Peru and flew to Cuzco, Peru. Driving to a pre-Inca site at 11,000 ft high in the Andes. First glimpse of the incredible stone work and a Inca doorway from the 1300's (with me in it). Then we met a woman who trades in coco leaves-legally with everyone trying some except for me. Checked into this beautiful mountain rustic hotel along the Urabamba River in the Sacred Valley.
