David Ross

After being diagnosed with Lewy Body Dementia about a year ago, the legendary broadcaster has died at the age of 66. He had been suffering with the misdiagnosed disease for three years. Ross’ first radio job was at WIXY-AM in Cleveland. At 28, Ross then went to WHYI-FM in Miami to take over as GM. He lead his team to unprecedented ratings in the Miami market and was a powerful promoter who believed in great programming and loved to incite fun into his sales team. Ross is pictured here with former Cumulus CEO Lew Dickey.

The South Florida landscape was prime for his huge armada of Y-100 vehicles, 30 ft high Inflatable Dolphins and massive street team. Y-100 was everywhere, High School Football Games, street parties, county fairs, concerts, beaches, he even had a vehicle called the Coppertone Squirt, which cruised the beaches Squirting suntan lotion. Devoted to many charities and causes, Ross felt it was paramount that Y-100 not just win over listeners and clients, but also win over the hearts of the community.   He was an innovator in many areas of digital and loyalty marketing with Scan Tags, before anyone knew what a scan bar was. Ross was way ahead of the curve with the Y-100 Loyal Listener Club. He declared Y-100 “AMERICA’s MegaStation” and Mega it was with Ernie Anderson’s voice booming between the hits and a personality driven line-up.

Dave is survived by his wife Valerie Ross, son J.P and step-daughter Nicole.   Services are Sunday, October 9th, 11:00 am- 1:00 PM, Glick Funeral Home, 3600 N. Federal Highway, Boca Raton, FL 561-672-1880.
