Samuel A. Hudson

1949 - 2020

Samuel Arthur Hudson, 71, of Cleveland, Ohio passed away July 17, 2020. He was born March 18, 1949 to his late parents, Sarah E. Mapson and Samuel Staton and his late adopted parents, Arthur Hudson and Mary W. Hudson.
Sam accepted Jesus Christ at an early age, he was a Member of the Jonas Temple Church of God and Christ in Cleveland, Ohio where he was saved.
Sam attended Cleveland Public School and later joined the United States Navy at the age of 21. During his service, Sam was stationed at Naval Air Station Patuxent River, Maryland, and Naval Air Station Jacksonville, Florida, Naval Station Mayport, Jacksonville, Florida and Naval Air Station Cecil Field, Jacksonville, Florida. After retiring from the Navy, Sam began working for the United States Postal Services.
Sam was joined in Holy Matrimony to Mary Frances Courtney on March 4, 1971.
Sam had a love for music; he always had the latest sounds. While in Jacksonville, Florida, Sam played the guitar in several bands. Sam enjoyed playing his music; he was known as the local DJ (Funkmaster Sam) in Maryland and Cleveland, Ohio, playing at cookouts, family reunions, weddings and birthday parties or just sitting on his front porch entertaining himself, Mary and the neighborhood kids.
One of Sam's enjoyments was when Mary and he would travel to Maryland from Ohio each summer to pick up their grandchildren, nieces, and nephews to stay with them for a brief summer vacation.
Sam was preceded in death by his wife, Mary Frances Hudson; his parents, Sarah E. Mapson and Samuel Staton; adopted parents, Arthur Hudson and Mary W. Hudson; his daughter, Betty Ann Smith; sisters, Loisetta E. Hodge and Antinette Dansby.
Sam leaves to mourn his memory two daughters, Renee D. Booker (Jerry) of Cleveland, Ohio and Juanita B. Commodore (Curtis) of Lexington Park, Maryland; five grandchildren, Rick Smith (Laci), LaToya Sewell, Andrew Sewell, DeAnthony Young and Monchele Young, 12 great grandchildren and two great, great grandchildren, all of Lexington Park, Maryland. Also remaining are his siblings, Lawrence I Armstead (Doris) of Springhill, Tennessee, Sandra Fluker, Amir Bilal, Anthony Staton, all of Cleveland, Ohio and Jerome Staton (Diane) of Hanceville, Alabama. He also leaves to mourn his memory five brothers-in-law, three sisters-in-law and a host of nieces, nephews and cousins.
Family and friends will unite on Monday, August 3, 2020 for visitation at 10 am until time of service at 11 am at Briscoe-Tonic Funeral Home, 38576 Brett Way, Mechanicsville, MD. Interment will follow at Immaculate Heart of Mary Church cemetery, Lexington Park, MD.
