                    November 3, 1950 - September 25, 2023

On the eve of Monday, September 25, 2023, Barbara Lynn Giles (Barbie) completed her journey to be with her Heavenly Father.  She was the second child of the (Late) Herbert Brown Sr. And Elizabeth Perry.  She was born in Birmingham, Alabama and lived there until the family moved to Shaker Heights, OH., where she attended and graduated from Shaker Heights High School.  Barbara met and married the (Late) Greg Wendall Giles.   This union produced two children: Darrell Wendall Giles and Sumbra Lynn Giles-Cyrus.

Barbara accepted her Lord Jesus Christ at a young age.  She was baptized at her family church First Baptist in Ensley, Alabama.  Barbara enjoyed spending time with her Auntie Lula Mea, Uncle Andrew, and her dear Grandma Lottie while in Alabama.  This is where her love and faithfulness emerged for her Lord and Savior Jesus Christ.  Her love of Christ continued in service as a member of New Light Missionary Baptist Church for over 50 years, where she held the position of Financial Secretary until her journey home.

Barbara was a wonderful mother and devoted her life to caring for her family. While being a stay-at-home mother she also assisted in the care and raising of other children until she reentered into the work force.  Throughout the years Barbara’s love expanded beyond her family, and several of her children’s friends adopted her as Mom.  Barbara worked in several Departments within the City of Shaker Heights: the Police Department; City Hall; and retired after 28 years from the Public Works Department.  Everyone at Public Works knew Barbie loved her snacks and would often visit the vending machine.  Barbie loved her snacks so much that she knew the vending machine operator by name, and often selected the items for the machines.

Our loving Barbie leaves to mourn two children: Darrell (Alicia), and Sumbra.  Grandchildren; Myisha, Darrell Jr., Quoreya, Tristan, and Elisha.  Great Grandchildren; Dezarae, Khloe, Makaylee, Tahir, Christoper Jr., Anomi, ZaTara, and Aura.  Her Mother Elizabeth Perry, and one Brother Herbert Brown Jr. Honorary Grandchildren; Journee Byrd-Allen, and Richard Clark.  A best friend Shinata Gouldlock, and a host of Nieces, Nephews, Cousins, and friends.

Proceeded in death by her Father Herbert Brown Sr., Sister Alfreda Ann Seats, Brothers Willie Carl Brown, and Harold Lee Brown, Her Uncle and Auntie Andrew and LulaMae Varner, her sweet Grandmother Lottie Jackson.

Though saddened by her passing, Barbara's obit seems to be a cheerful tribute to a life well lived. She was clearly someone who reached out to others as a natural instinct. And I must say that I loved the anecdote about her fondness for snacks and relationship with the vending machine. I wish there were more such anecdotes in obits, making the loved one even more memorable.

Barbara was clearly a Shaker that lived in the Heights. A very kind and straight forward person who wasn't afraid to ask questions. She will always be remembered in my mind.
