Twenty five years ago I moved to Sweden for a year as an exchange student in a suburb of Stockholm. Not only did I become fluent in Swedish, I traveled to to France to ski in the Alps. Spent 10 days in the Soviet Union with Kip Knudson and traveled to London where I saw the Wimbledon final between Martina Navritilova and Chris Evert. Also saw McEnroe in the doubles final. Pretty cool. In 1984 I attended St. John's University (Collegeville) and graduated with a degree in Government in 1988. I enrolled at William Mitchell College of Law that fall. Graduated and passed the bar in 1991. During law school I discovered that all I wanted to do with my degree was help people who have been accused. A quote by Thomas Paine helps me explain why I love doing this work: "For where the rights of men are equal, every man must finally see the necessity of protecting the rights of others as the most effectual security of his own."
After law school I was hired by a small firm in Glenwood, MN where I handled public defender contracts in Pope and Stevens Counties. I won my first 4 out of 5 criminal jury trials. I also handled civil commitment and divorce cases. In 1996 I wanted to get back to Mpls and took a job with a criminal defense firm where I worked until July, 2000. At that point I launched my own firm, Robert M. Christensen, P.L.C. located in downtown Minneapolis. I have been practicing criminal defense in this capacity for the last eight years. I have one associate attorney who support me with research and writing. Highlights include winning an attempted murder case in 2004 involving a cab driver shooting in North Mpls (it was in the newspaper) winning a suppression hearing resulting indismissal of drug charges in Federal Court, and winning a civil case against Champps Restaurant where I proved to a jury that my client should have won a 60K prize for picking every game right in the 2000 NCAA basketball tournament. That was fun. My practice includes handling all criminal matters from DWI (over 100 victories) to major felonies in State and Federal courts.
After moving from Glenwood, I lived in downtown Mpls for 10 years and two year ago moved to Uptown approximately 3 blocks from Lake Calhoun. I have yet to get married despite a few long term relationships. No one has asked me yet? Smile. I do have one niece who was born a year ago. She's adorable. In my free time I run 3 miles most days and go to a lot of sporting events, socialize with friends and spend time with my family at our cabin on Whitefish Lake. I also play softball and golf in the summers and travel when I have time. I am looking forward to seeing everyone and catching up at the reunion weekend. Cheers.
