Cross Country
Since the beginning of SMNW school history in 1969 our runners at Northwest have only known one coach! Coach Van Rose! Who knew.. nearly 41 years later .. Coach Rose is still coaching young men and young women. Our Cougar teams through the years have accomplished amazing victories. During his wonderful career at SMNW his teams have won a combined total 31 state championships he and his cross country teams have won plus the 14-year winning streak the Boys team began in 1994. In 2008, that streak of championships came to an end, his team finished 2nd behind Lawrence High School. In 2009, Boys team finished 3rd in the 6A class championship, only 2 points behind Washburn Rural. Lawrence, who ended the 14-year winning streak in 2008, repeated as state champions in 2009.
Congrats guys on your success and to you Coach Rose for being such a wonderful example through the years. I am so proud that I was able to be a small part of the long history which continues today. Thank YOU Coach Rose! Dennis "Mac" McDaniel

5) Cool Schools KCTV 5 August 28, 2009
Shawnee Mission Northwest was the first KCTV5 Cool School. Early morning crowd filled the new school gym (Cougar Lair Gym), the band and orchestra played and the cheerleaders performed early on a Friday morning, as the student body celebrated their selection... as the first COOL SCHOOL in the Kansas City area.
