I just wanted to write a tribute to a good friend. Brett and I were friends from 6th grade until his untimely passing. Brett and I were in Scouts together and spent a lot of time working on our personal hobby, trying to create a laser. We never got the materials together but he sure believed in the idea.

Brett wanted to be a professional musician when he grew up. He was full of life and had no shortage of fun ideas. He wanted us to perform at a talent show of some kind by doing a lip sync to Paul Simon's "Call me Al." We practiced for hours but I chickened out at the last minute.

His passing hit me hard. However, how his Mother Nadine handled the loss was inspiring. She was elected to the City Council. She worked hard for Sheridan, ensuring the tragedy she experienced would never happen to another family. Later, the park by where Brett was killed was named after him.

Now that I, (Do I dare say the rest of us), am older I look back on my friendship with fondness. He is still missed. I can only dream how much better the world could have been had he not met his untimely demise.

I remember Brett when we were in the fourth or fifth grade at Coffeen. He lived just a few blocks from school and I was over at his house several times. He was a lot of fun!

Brett's loss was a major even for our class.  If I remember correctly, I was over at his house for a sleepover a few days before he died.  I was just getting to know him because I had just moved back to Sheridan the year before, but I could tell he had great potential.  I am glad we are recognizing him.
