Northwood High School
Class Of 1958

Richard C. DeMUTH  11/30

FOUND! (Robert) Neal CALHOUN is alive and well, and living in eastern West Virginia. With an assist from Nancy LOVE Villarreal and Neal's sister-in-law (married to his youngest brother Arthur, a medical doctor), I phoned Neal and we had quite a chat, easily in excess of all the words we ever exchanged at NHS. Quiet Neal from our high school days is now rather talkative. He has lived in a number of states and before retirement, enjoyed varying occupations from junior staffer with the Library of Congress to colporter to vegetarian cook for Seventh Day Adventist schools. Neal remembers Gerry OLSON, Bob SCOVILLE, and Gale DAWSON McCune from his school days. He questioned me about Northwood's current status and in turn told me a great deal about the Seventh Day Adventist community in the Washington area, most of which I didn't know. We enjoyed an engaging and lengthy conversation before we rang off. He has given me permission to post his contact information. Neal can be reached at (304) 637-5366 (landline) or (304) 476-7189 (cell), or just drop him a note or card at P.O. Box 26, Elkins, WV 26241. I think he would appreciate getting a line or two from an old pal or classmate at Northwood.

We're now down to 18 members of the Class of 1958 on the Lost Patrol.

Sadly, we report the death of Linda Byrd Johnson on August 1st of this year. Linda lived in Churchton, on the Maryland Western Shore, and much enjoyed her life there, which included gardening and watching water birds. One of us spoke with Linda earlier this summer, and she declared that she awaited the upcoming reunion with great anticipation, having missed the 55th year event because of circumstances that arose at the last minute. We in turn shall greatly miss her at the 60th.

One of the downsides of having a reunion pending is that we learn, more often than not belatedly, of the passings of old classmates. We have been informed of two in recent weeks: Paul Longley, on May 5, 2015, and Carolyn Jarrett Roher, on July 8, 2016 (she was 75 y.o. at the time). Our sincere condolences to Paul's widow Leslie, and to Carolyn's widower and our classmate, Dick Roher. To those classmates for whom Paul and Carolyn had been close friends back at Northwood, and perhaps still were despite the passing years, we extend our sympathies as well.
