Has anyone been back to see Northwood. What happened to our driver's ed course?

Yes, I've been back. I haven't been inside the building but the outside doesn't look anything like what we knew. The courtyard was closed in. I'd like to get inside to take a look. Maybe in the fall. Are you up for it Cindy?

What did they do with the totem pole? Drivers Ed course long gone. I can still hear Mr Bolyard, GD Sailer don't you know where the break is, now lets go on the Beltway!

How come I don't remember the totem pole? I must be senile. You haven't seen but they have big round silver pipes. I don't know what they are doing with that. I go back to see my dad in the old neighborhood every weekend so I have a lot of memories there!

Going back to NHS

Today Cindy (Levine Warne) and I visited NHS. If you haven't been back since your last day of school in June of '76, I highly recommend going back for a visit. The outside looks very different because they've added on, but once you get inside the building, you quickly make your way into the old section, the "H" shape with the curly cues (the wings that took you to the music room, locker rooms, etc) The hallways look the same except they've upgraded the lockers--now red with recessed locks so you can no longer walk by a string of lockers, banging the locks as you go. Cindy & I did find a set of old lockers near the girls' locker room and open and slammed them shut just for old time's sake. Yep, they sounded the same. Did anyone ever close their locker quietly? I don't think I ever did and don't remember anyone else ever doing it. Can someone answer a question for Cindy & I? Where was the library? Neither one of us can remember where it was--Cindy because her memory is going bad on her and me because I don't think I ever went to the library--I spent most of my time in the courtyard, in the box, or at the park. Smile Classrooms looked the same but smaller. How did they get so many desks into one room? It was fun stepping into some of my old classrooms--Mrs. Arnold's English, Ms. Stuckey's Algebra (the room where I watched the "new" auditorium go up), Mrs. Burns' typing & shorthand, Mrs. Davilla's art class, Mrs. Kimball's English, Williamson's biology......They say you can't go back, but for a brief time today, I did. It was a bittersweet experience. I found myself thinking about some of our classmates and teachers who are gone and will never walk those halls again. If you can, take the opportunity to go back for a visit. If you've got good memories of high school like I do, you won't regret that walk down memory lane, except be prepared for the longing and sadness that will inevitably come over you and linger for a while.

Thanks Donna for that post. It was really nice reading about the old halls of NHS. I've been trying to think where the library could have been and I swear, I don't remember a library either! I've driven around the outside of the building but had not been inside since the youngest Ayoub graduated (the year they closed it down). You've convinced me to go and visit. See you all in September.

Not that I spent alot of time there but I recall that the library was on the second floor. Maybe along the main hallway. I hung out there after Ms. Benson booted me from her Spanish class.

Not only has the building changed but the sports fields have as well. Football is still there but the baseball field moved years ago. I think the new field has the fence around the football field in center field.

Donna and I went back to visit to take more pictures. The new class of 2013 was there and several teachers. When we said we were from the class of 76, the teacher's weren't even born yet.

Well we will have some great pictures to post at the reunion as some things are the same and a lot is different.

I agree with Mike. The library was on the second floor across from Mrs. Turner's typing class, I think.

You're right. Cindy Levine Warne and I went back to the school to take pictures just before the reunion on Sept. 12th and we went into what use to be the library. It looks VERY different. No more books. We took pictures of that room and many others, and when Cindy finally gets a chance to breathe, she's going to post those pictures on this website. Stay tuned!

I’ve been inside, changed a few things around, new lockers. Are you coming to the Party on Sept 22

I'm planning to! Who knows how many of us will be left for the next reunion. It makes me sad to think of those who have passed.
