I got to know Bob better when we were in college at Maryland. He was a remarkable person -- a high achiever despite a major physical impairment. He was a great person and a good friend and his death at age 20 was truely a shock. It came as the sudden, unexpected result of a hidden congenital defect.

Bob's uncle Mel Hausner and my father were best friends in high school and college in New York, and they stayed in touch until my father's untimely death in 1983. Bob passed away while we were in college, I think it was 1978.

I taught Bob Electronics for two years. He was a high achieving and dedicated student. He never let his handicap interfere with his achievements. I will never forget that he walked to school every day. Out of the thousands of students that I have taught, he stands out as one of the best.

Bob and I grew up across the street from one another. He never let his handicap get in the way of anything. When we got to bike riding age, Bob parents bought him a vehicle that he operated with his arms. Bob did everything with us including going over jumps. Later, he had the best basketball court in the neighborhood (attached to his carport). The neighborhood spent many evenings shooting hoops until Bob's Mom and Dad would ask everyone to leave because we were keeping them awake. Bob was an inspiration to all who knew him and I still miss him.

What an amazing person Bobby was! I grew up just one street over (hi George!!) and can remember him showing me the first radio he put together!! (and I could hardly get my transitor batteries changed!)
I met him the very first day of kindergarten, at McDonald Knolls Elem. He'd gone to the restroom, and I came in a few minutes behind. I was terrified of everything, and can remember my mom dropping me off and telling me to get in a seat. I did. It was Bobby's. I had no idea, until he came back and burst into tears and told the teacher I'd taken his seat. lol!!! I was mortified, and vilified for about a week as the "kid who took the boy with the crutches seat" He'd be laughing at that memory now.
In 6th grade, we had to do the Presidents Phys Fitness test, and to get ready Mrs. S. had us run a huge loop around the back field. I was fast, very fast, the one thing my bony long legs could do. So she started Bobby first (crutches and all, that boy didn't let ANYTHING stop him) then everyone else, then me, last!
Well, by time I was allowed to go, he was rounding the last bend. I put everything I had into catching up, and he crossed the finish line ahead of me by a foot. Everyone cheered, including me! We were thrilled for him, and he would have been furious if I'd let him win on purpose! He finished ahead of me fair and square! (and never let me forget it!! LOL!!!!)
What a terrific guy!

I was able to determine that Bob died in January 1978.
